Subject: 4.7 Oversize Oil Filters IP: Logged
Message: I have long posted that the 4.7 can accomodate a larger oil filter such as the Wix 51515, Purolator PL3001, and the Amsoil SDF15. After doing some research, I have found that the Wix 51773, Purolator PL40017, and Amsoil SDF26 are almost two inches longer than the previously mentioned oversize filters and retain the same mounting face specifications. It should work as long as it does not touch the serpentine belt. It might be close.

Message: The by-pass spring pressure may be different on larger filters. Thats a no-no.

Message: A friend of mine had his oil changed at a "Jiffy Lube" style lube place and they put a larger filter which was also the wrong filter on his engine. The check engine light came on and the car ran like sh*t. He barely made it back to the lube place. They discovered that they had installed a filter for one of the other engines that was available with that car. They changed the filter and topped off the oil for free but, about 2 weeks later he had to have his engine replaced because of a slight knocking sound that grew into a loud knocking sound. Luckily, it was still under warranty.

Message: Motorcraft FL1's work also I think. It's longer, I used one a few times on my 4.7. I Usually use Wix, or even the Walmart brand, which is supposed to have good specs also.

THE SAME ONE FROM THE FACTORY!
Why bother changing the size of your filter? It will not extend oil change intervals.-don't even think about it. Change it at 3K like recommended and be a good boy now.
