Subject: Lack of power?
IP: Logged

Message:
I got a 92 Dodge Dakota LE 4x4 5.2 V-8 It also has an auto with 3.55 limited slip rear. At first I believed that I was having engine trouble but I find it hard to believe because I have recently gone through everything. Full tune up, cleaned injectors new exhaust and cat, as well as a tranny flush etc. On top of that I'm running a K&N filter and an MSD 6AL box for plenty of spark. The problem seems to be in the low part of my power band because the vehicle pulls realy hard to redline from 2600 on up. However, the truck doesn't even come close to spinning the tires of the line. Does something seem wrong here? I'm thinking that it could be the gearing because at 70mph I don't even turn 2000 rpm and the truck won't make any power that low down. Even to hold 65-70mph on the slightest grade causes it to shift down for power. Also at 85mph I'm turning only about 2250. I don't know what gearing the tranny has but I KNOW the truck should be stronger than this! Either that or maybe I'm just asking too much? Any ideas would be great

It's a 4x4 truck, not a Mustang. 3.55 is a moderate gear IMO. Especially if you have heavy off road tires. Get the revs up a tad and try a power launch and see what happens.

try the timing mod you see in these forums for the crank sensor,it sounds like your timing is slow.

this will bring back some power and mileage

Yeah your right its not a mustang. I have a 1968 Dart that with a built 360 and it does plenty of the smokey burnouts. So I'm not lookin for that in my truck. But I have rode in other identical trucks that have more low end. Thanks for the info though...I'm gonna look into getting deeper gears and check out the crank sensor to see if that's an issue
much appreciated

What size tires do you have?

"at 70mph I don't even turn 2000 rpm" I suspect your true rear gearing is something like 3.00:1 or lower.

I have factory specified tires for the truck.
LT235/75/15, so it nothing to large. I have wondered about the gearing though. The OEM equipment sticker under the hood says 3.55, but I should physically check. What kind of rpm should I be turning at 70 mph? And does anyone know how many gear different gears-sets were available for the A518?

my 92 stays at the same rpm at 70mph as ur's its just what they do, but the no power off the line seems wrong because mine roasts tires if i hit it
