Subject: Cold starting Problems- Computer IP: Logged
Message: When the out side temperature is above 40 degrees my 92 dak 318 144000 miles runs and starts perfect.
1 or 2 turns then purring. However when it is cold then it refuses to start. What I have discovered is if I turn the key on and dont try to start it then it will begin to click\buzz and the check engine light will not come on at first then the light will begin to strobe until it comes on like it normally should. As soon as this occurs then it will fire fine. The problem is the colder it gets the worse it gets. This morning I kept having to turn the key off and on again until the check engine light eventually came on(took about 10 minutes and it was 10 degrees). It will not cycle the codes when it is doing this either. Once the truck starts it runs fine and there are no codes stored. My guess is a chip in the computer is failing. However before I run out replace I wanted to here if anyone else has a guess as to what might be occurring. Is it perhaps waiting for reading from a sensor that it is not getting

Message: I would check your battery first. Enough cold-cranking amps? You may be near the end for the computer. I had a '92 5.2 that the computer would act up about every 35 miles (turn off then restart one second later), starting at 160,000 miles. Installed a MP 25hp computer, end of problem, and more performance.

Message: Well, I'm no cold weather expert here (lived in northern Ohio for 10 years) but maybe a block heater will help? It is possible the computer is cold dead, but then it wouldnt start at all right? Just an idea.

Message: Thanks for the feed backk. Its Not the battery. New battery and Plenty of CCAs I can sit there and crank away. The problem is it will not fire until the check engine light will come on. When I turn on the key all of the other dash lights come on Oil-Abs etc.. but light up no check engine light. at about 40 degrees will take about 20 seconds then it will gradually come on.
At 10 degrees I had to keep turning the key off and then back on again. After several tries it starts to buzz then the light begins to strobe dim and slow at first then as it warms up it will come on full. At that point the truck will start. The buzz\click noise seems to be coming from the box that hold the fuses-breakers. above 40 no problem starts right up. I know in electronics that is how they test bad circutry by getting it cold. Can this be my problem??

Message: I think I have this resolved. I got out of the vehicle with the key on and traced the buzzing to the fuel pump module. AS a temporary fix I switched it with the A/C module. No Problems since. Although I am pretty sure my A/c won't work when it is cold now!!! will replace next stop at dealer.
