Message: Yeah, that happens to me too. I also have a 5.2, but I live in Canada. It usually will take a while for it to warm up before it will start to shift a little more usual, but it happens once and a while. Never asked the dealer what he thought. Anybody else have an opinion on it?

Message: Yup, me too. I just lock it out til I drive down the road a few miles. I have a '98 5.2 Sport. I only noticed it after I adjusted the kick down cable tighter.
I noticed the shudder shifting so it's time to change the fluid and put a kit in it.

Message: Probably normal. The 404/413 FWD would do the same thing. My 45RFE does the same thing too.
Per the FSM, its not supposed to shift into OD or Lockup till the tranny reaches a certain temp.
Presumably, this is to ease wear on the trans and also the motor will warm up quicker reach op temp more quckly.
Watch your temp gauge...if the PCM does not see a high enough engine temp, it will also block the tranny from shifting into OD.

Message: It says in the owners manual that you need to let your tranny get warmed up before it can go into OD

Message: demodan24 , your rpm's at 65 sound a bit high your lock-up in the coverter may not be working,or it may be a 3.92 or 4.10 rear gear

Message: I own a 99 Dakota 5.2L which also does this. I'm a chrysler employee in Canada, this is a normal operation. There is a temperature sensor under the battery which tells the controler not to allow overdrive until the transmission is warmed up to prevent overheating due to the fluid being thick when cold.
