Subject: What oil/filter is in your dak? IP: Logged
Message: Hey, I just got a '04 Dak Quad Cab 4.7L 4x4. Time to change oil and filter so I turn to all of you for an opinion. I know your tired of hearing this about oil, but would appreciate the help. I would like a synthetic oil, I heard of some new oils, Royal Purple, and Quakerstate 4x4 & SUV. I was wondering if anyone has used these oils or Mobil 1, etc. I do some off-roading and much stop and go driving with the occasional races. What oil and filter should I consider. K&N, Mopar, Fram filter, etc. Thanks again.

Message: I use Mobil 1 5-30 and Mopar oil filter
and it's my forth dodge truck, so I ONLY use Mopar performance parts. Fram oil filters are junk, just cut one open sometime and you find nothing but cardboard.
Others on this site will disagree with me and thats fine. To each his own.
Don't be fooled by all the hype on aftermarket
products(like K&N). I was, once upon a time, after waisting many dollars.I learned my lesson.
Enjoy your new Dakota, I just love mine and I'm not sorry I bought it.
Late, Kindig
01 DAK SLT 4.7 4X4 AUTO 3.55 LSD
p.s. Remember, only use Mopar Performance Parts

Message: Amsoil 10w-30 and Amsoil SDF-15 filter. I used to use Mobil 1 10w-30 and M1-301 filter but switched since the engine runs a little smoother on Amsoil and I ran into trouble finding the Mobil 1 filters in my area. The large filter for the 4.7 is O.E size for a small block Ford or big block Mopar if you need a quick reference.

Message: 1995 5.2L (basically stock) running Royal Purple 10w-30 and Fram Tough Guard filter. This Fram is a good filter but still has a paper endcap. I change oil every 3k to 4k miles, religiously. Engine idle is very smooth, minimal oil loss. RP is expensive, though...

Message: I purchased a K&N oil filter about 2 oil changes ago and that was nothing but a waste of money. Why pay $20 for something when you can get about the same thing for $5?

Message: Purolator PureOne filter with Mobil drive clean oil. Both items are relatively cheap as per money. But they do the job.

Anyone ever tried Royal Purple?

Message: Thanks everyone for your input on this. I'm thinking of sticking with the mopar filter and ita still between Royal Purple, Mobil 1, or Quaker State for 4x4's. Though Royal Purple is expensive, i am leaning towards it.

Message: I use WIX filters and any brand name (Penzoil, Exxon,Mobil,Texaco etc etc) 5wx30 non synthetic oil (synthetic is just fine also). I've worked for NJ State Police as a mechanic and we were stuck with State Contract crap which was always unknown branded oil filters (or Fram) and oil. All I can tell you is that we changed the oil every 5k (every two weeks or so) in the pursuit vehicles and those cars, (Fords or Chevys) lasted 120k before we had to turn them in which was usually in two years. If the cheap crap can keep an engine running well, just imagine how good brand name stuff would work.
My personal vehicles over the years using the wix filters, oil changes every 3k and brand name oil have all lasted 115k+ before I sold them and without the need for engine work. In fact , my old Spirit which I sold with 105K on it is still on the road with over 120K.
