Message: I recently installed a Flowmaster 2 chamber (single inlet, single outlet) muffler on my 4.7. I got it used from my brother, and he just dumped the outlet right out the back of the muffler through a 3" tip, so I left it as it was to avoid additional cutting and welding. The truck must have some kind of factory high flow cat or something because it sounds phenomenal, but under acceleration you can't hear the radio or anything anyone might be trying to say, and everything vibrates pretty strongly. Granted, there are times when I prefer it that way, and it is kind of nice to set off car alarms when I drive by, but sometimes it just gives me a headache. I have zero experience with trucks, and was wondering what advice people had for mellowing out the sound - what size pipe to run how far, tips, dump out before (to the side) or after the back tire, etc, etc... Right now it's definitely louder in the low end, and I'd like some rumble around 3500-4000 rpm, not just a loud airy blowing noise.
Thanks!

Message: Get a different muffler. Try magnaflow or gibson if you want what you are looking for.

Message: I am running mine (1999 5.2Mag. V-8 5-speed X-tra cab 4x4)without any muffler at all. I took off the factory cold air box air filter and put on an EDELBROCK 13" chrome air cleaner/filter and had MIDAS cut out my muffler and weld in a straight pipe with a chrome 3" extention. The sound is awesome and I can feel a differance in accelleration. For a little extra umph!! I use turbo 108 octane booster (2 cans, 32oz each) with each tank of premium un-leaded. I beat a 80's mustang Gt 302ci (by a bunch)and several other v-8 cars and trucks. I Love It!!

Message: or you can dump the tips out the back of the truck rather than underneath...that was there won't be AS much cabin drone...but there will still be some

Message: Dumping the exhaust under the truck turns the truck into a giant drum.
If you add some pipe to the end of the muffler you will quiet down a lot. Dump the exhaust outside the vehicle. It's safer too. No Carbon Monoxide worries.

Message: I guess I should have been more specific. I replaced the muffler with a straight piece of pipe. The rest of the exhaust is intact. The 3" chrome piece is the tail pipe exiting behind the right rear wheel. (3" is the pipe diameter.) The exhaust exits the truck behind the R/R tire.

Message: My 92 5.2 dak has a 3" pipe ran to about mid truck where it splits into two 2.5" pipes where it runs to the back where i have dual 3.5" tips and it sounds great. I think I'm going to get a new CAT cause its old and I wanna go high flow. On a side note...there is a guy i know here in town that has a 98 dak i believe that has TRUE duals all the way back with no cats or mufflers...the thing is loud as hell!! but mine isnt too loud(unless accelerating) its not enough to get the cops following me, that is if im behaving.
