Subject: Pulling Power IP: Logged
Message: I am considering buying a 2001 Dakota Crew Cab with the 4.7 V8 "Plus" package. The reason for this purchase is I have a small family, wife and one child, and we are planning on moving to Alaska. My question is this... I am pulling a 6X12 Uhaul trailer loaded with household things, how will the 4.7 handle the climbing...and furthermore how will the automatic handle the load?? My concern is that I will buy this beautiful truck with low miles, and that pulling the weight "up the mountains" will burn it up just getting there. Any comments good or bad are appreciated. Thanks

Message: You should be fine, that doesn't sond like that big a load for the 4.7. Not familiar with the "Plus package", what is that ? With the tow package I pull a 19' cuddy cabin or a 24.5' camper, no problem on large New England hills.

Message: Do you know what the towing capacity is on the 2001 Crew Cab? From what I have read online, the "Plus" package is something offered in the SLT and Sport models. I am uncertain yet if the Plus has anything to do with the drive train or just add on packages to the "wish lists". The other truck I am looking at is a F-150 Crew with a 5.4L which comes with 260HP/350 FtLbs of Torque and 7700Lb towing Capacity. All interior options are the same.

Message: 9,200lbs GCWR with 3.55's and 10,500 GCWR with 3.92's both using heavy duty package.
Heavy duty package includes: 136 amp alternator, 750 amp battery, trans cooler and powersteering cooler.
These specs came from the 2002 brochure I received with my truck. I have this package and pull a 3000lb boat all over flat Florida. No problem with 3.55's. 10mpg with an Auto.

Thanks everyone!

Message: Often, it's better to start a new thread for that. I've done a fair amount of towing with mine. What are your issues that you would like clarified ? Knowing which v8 you are talking about, the weight of the trailer you are buying, and your gear ratio could help.

Message: There's a funny one ! What's the biggest engine available in the new F-150 ? Isn't it just a 4.6; in a heavier truck than ours ? The guys on a Ford forum have been recomending that people who want to tow with a Ford should skip the F-150, and step up to the 3/4 ton truck. Thanks for the nonsense post...

Message: For "Steven Roarke" - you loose that bet, the idiot just posted after you. A 28' camper would be way to heavy for a v6 Dakota to tow, regardless of year or design. And not only are you a coward, afraid to post under your regular name when sniping at me, but you are a racist as well...
