Message: you beat a car that weighs in about the same as you, has a 400 ci engine, 4 brrl carb 4 speed manual shift tranny and dual exhaust and usually came with 3.9 something or 4.11 gears. Are you sure the driver was racing you? you must be turning in some really good timeslips as those things when new were turning in 98 to 110 mph trap speeds. I had a friend that had one new back in the early '70s he could blow off Dusters with a 318 4 bbl in them, for those not knowledgeable in the matter, My sister had a '72 2 bbl 318 auto in her duster and ran 89-91 in the traps, the thing was bone factory stock, the duster only had a curb weight of 2200 lbs so you must really be lightweght in your truck to run that well.

Message: Yeah rite - while you came up with the correct reason why its called a 442,(which is why many find it annoying to hear them called "four forty twos") it was only the early ones that came with the bigger motors (455) and four speed tranny. some 70s 442s had low compression smog 350s and automatics, largely a trim package. I could beat one of those with my 2000 v8 4x4, I had a very similar "73 Cutlass S, there is no doubt in my mind. These later 442s were dogs. A better weight estimate of a v8 Duster weight would be around 3300 lbs unless it was completely gutted with fiberglass bumpers, you state it was "bone factory stock".

Message: I am sure it was a 73 or newer. They still made them for a few years after the "good years" The newer ones were big heavy and had nothing comparable to the real big blocks in 70 and 71. I would say the 73 and up would be hard pressed to get high 16 in the 1/4.

Message: The 70-72 442 (which is only a Cutlass b/c of the body) is its own car, marketed like that by Olds since the 442 did so well after hitting the show rooms in the mid 60's. The late 60's 442s had the 400 in it (some with 350's). Not too shabby of an engine but could somewhat keep up with the Goats. In 70 they dropped the stout 455 in it. This engine makes 500tq. @ 3600 and 370hp @ 5200 stock (for the W-30)! In 71 that dropped to 350hp @ 4700 and 460tq @3200 (again W-30). In 72 the numbers drop down to 300/410. So if it was a REAL 442 from the early 70's (a lot of clones out there w/350's under the hood)then there is no chance of you pulling on him. Even with the car weighing 3600-3900 lbs. That hp/tq combo in a car can run over most cars today (z-28's not the ss, GT not the Cobra). Of course once you hit 110+ they run out of gear b/c of that 1:1 final tranny gear.
The 73+ models began the suck phase of the Cutlass b/c of the emissions crap, and would be understandable of you did take one of these guys.
My 71 has a 455 in it from a Delta 88. Pushing about 270hp @ 4400 and 370 tq @3200. My car is fast considering it weighs 3800 with me in it, and I cannot see you pulling me unless you have a lot of stuff done to your truck. Maybe it's possible, but I think that you found someone with a 350 under the hood.

Message: They stopped putting the 455 in the cars in 77, but the 403 was in there from 78-80. Then the 350 lasted till 80 also, and with the 305's & 307's being there until the car went FWD in 88. I thought that the 442 had the 455 from the early 70's on to late 70'2 when they used the 403. Also, wasn't the 403 the engine in a lot of the Trans Am's? Hence the 6.5L written on the hood's intake?
Or was the 455 then on to the 403 just an option (again thinking that the 442 had the biggest eng.)?

Message: Well, you've already been informed of what you most likely beat, if it was really racing you.
I was equally excited when I outran an old 442 about a year ago. Then I went and talked to him......
Came to find out it was an extrememly heavy car, w/ nothing more than a 350 in it, that wasn't even allowed to have much power b/c of emissions crap.
