Subject: 4.7 L Radiator Drain Valve

Message:
I was going to change my coolant today on my 4.7l and after pulling off the lower engine cover ( with oil filter access hole) I cannot for the life of me find the radiator drain valve. Do I have to pull off the lower fan shroud?

There may not be one not all vehicles are equipt with one. Just pull your lower radiator hose its a little messier but it will do the job. Make sure your prepared to contain the fluid that is going to come out, espesialy if you have pets.

The only problem I see with pulling the lower hose is that it connects to the radiator about half way up the side so it will only drain about half the radiator. I suspect it is set up for one of those dealer units that exchange and recharge the coolant rather than the old drain and replace. If that's the case I just wasted $140 for the special top radiator and heater hoses. My 86 Dakota was a hell of a lot easier to work on but not half as well refined.

you might try siophoning it out the rest of the way. Even if you do get all of it out of the radiator you still have the whole block wich holds quite a bit of the fluid. Also if you want again a little messy run your garden hose to the fill on top of your radiator that will help flush the rest out it should come out clear fairly quickly you should have to flush very long sometime the best thing to do to get a really good flush is to have a shop do it. Find some one you dont mind working on your rig and pay the 45-50.00 it'll cost. (it's easier cleanup if you dont have to cleanup)If you know a shop that uses the Wynns machine it will do a very good job.

The drain valve on my 01 Dak QC 4.7 is on the driver's side once you pull the lower shroud.

I tried pulling the lower shroud - 2 bolts on bottom, but I couldn't get it to clear the tab on the overflow tank - not a lot of room here -or the transmission cooling lines. What else do I have to remove to get the lower shroud off? This is turning into way to much of a project for what was supposed to be a simple task.

Mine is on the driver side corner. You can reach it when you pop off the oil filter round cover on the splash shield and it has a drain hose.

For access to the radiator drain you will have to remove the plastic cover that is on the bottom under the radiator. It is held in place by six or eight of those dumb plastic "christmas trees" that most of the time can't be reused. The drain is actually on the end of the radiator, not on the aft side like the old ones. It is plastic and only requires a half turn to open. The first time I used mine I had to very carefully pull out and turn it with a pair of pliers. My drain has a short piece of hose attached to it and the open end stows on a plastic peg on the radiator.

Can't get much more descriptive than that. I used a garden tool weed puller (has a forked end) to remove the plastic fasteners. The fasteners came right out and were reusable.

I'll try looking through the oil filter access hole now that I know what I'm looking for. I;ve had that the platic cover off once but didn't know where to look. I used the claw of a hammer to pull the pins out but distroyed about half of them - I had some replacements. I'll have to check on those block drians befor I try this though. The $59 the dealer wants is starting to look cheap except that I already bought the hoses and they're nonreturnable. The hoses aren't bad but since they tell you to change every 4 years I figured I'd do everything at once. Talk about getting the car before the horse.

Does anyone know what the lower shroud is for? It makes oil changes very difficult. Anyone see problems leaving it out?
Thanks.
