Subject: single plane or dual plane

Message:
I put a 5.9 crate engine in my 91 dakota sport and it currently has an M1 single plane with a 750cfm holley on it. I was thinking of switching to an M1 dual plane for tuning purposes and for cold weather purposes. Has anyone else done this? I know that I will loose some top end, but how much? I should also gain some bottem end horse power and torque, but how much? Also, I would like to hear from some one who has an M1 dual plane intake and see how they like it. What rpm does this intake peak out at? Any info is appreciated.

There is no Duel plane M1, even if there was, a duel plane would build more torque on the bottom end vs. a single plane. The single plane M1 raises your powerband vs. the stock single plane beer keg style.

No dual plane? Hmmmmm.
P5249500 is the dual plane carb manifold for Magnums. Mopar considers the beer keg to be the dual plane for MPI applications.
A lot of the buyers who started with the single plane units have moved to dual planes and also switched in a milder cam than the original 380 hp units. For carbs, the dual plane is considered an idle-5500 rpm manifold, the single plane is 2600-6000 rpm, so while the single plane will pull away some in the 5000+ rpm range, you won't feel it much if at all, unless you have a really hot cam that can make use of the extra breathing. You'll do so much better in the lower rpm, it'll be much more streetable. Vacuum tends to improve due to the stronger signal in a dual plane, with all the associated benefits.

the beer keg manifold is a single plane manifold. this is per the factory service manual and the magnum engine books. mopar uses the M1 terminolgy for its dual plane and single plane manifolds.

If you want a good dual plane intake, look to Edelbrock. Their Performer and Performer RPM manifolds are some of the best in the industry. I've used both on a number of street cars with excellent results.

Looking at the FSM it does list the "keg" as a single plane intake. Looks like somebody made a typo in the MP catalog because it has the stock intake listed as a DP. Looking into the keg, it's a lot more like a quirky single. Definitely not a dual plane. That's weird. A single tuned to peak so low.
.boB....You've never used an Edelbrock Performer intake on a Magnum, because they don't make them for Magnums. Maybe soon, but not yet.

Brad Drake: I apologize about the M1 no dual plane intake comment, I was under the impression that the M1 designation was for the single plane performance intakes.

thanks for all of the info guys. I may just get a dual plane yet. The major thing that i was worried about was loosing horse power. I have about 380 horse right now, and i love it. You know how it is, a guy never wants to loose horsepower. Thanks again for your info.
