I had to get your attention, but heres my question.

Well I have a 2000 4.7 and on Monday I am upgrading to a 2002 4.7. Both white 4x4 CC w/ 5spd 3.92. Anyway since it seems most of these exhausts lose power, why buy one? I would love to spend money on an exhaust but which to buy. IF SOMEONE HAS PROOF OF A POWER GAIN W/ A CATBACK EXHAUST PLEASE TELL ME. ANY POWER GAIN TOP OR LOW END, LOW PREFERABLY. THANK YOU. I love this website and cherish every piece of advice given

I forgot to tell you that we also have a single in single out 40 series on our 99 5.2 4x4 Durango with the same results.

Hawkeye,

On your durango, how loud is the exhaust? I have the same as that but I thought it would be much louder then it is. Mine is a 3" out, is that why it isn't that loud? It's really deep but not that earpiercing loudness I thought I'd have.

Hey Jon,
I have a 2001 4.7 auto, and I had a 40 series muffler installed, it is single in, dual out, with a 3" tip. I kept the original 2 1/2" exhaust pipes, so not to loose back-pressure. But if you are wanting to know how it sounds, it sounds somewhat in a way like a mustang (kind of), but anyways it sounds good, and yes do expect to loose a little low end, at least until you're PCM re-learns the new modification, and then you will gain it back, with a little more, at least I did. Word for thought- dont remove you're cat's or expect to loose some low end, and not gaining it back.

I would like to know where everyone is getting that they are loosing low end with their new exhaust. In 11 years on aftermarket mufflers, mainly flowmasters, I have never lost anything. If anything I gained a little. I have a flowmaster on my truck, my Durango, and my friend has it on his truck. None of them have lost anything. If they did anything they gained a little. All of them have a K&N filter in. I am wondering if a lot of people are just hearing the exhaust more and not into the pedal as much as before when it was quieter, making it seem like its not as different than before and like I said in some cases a little better. Just curious as to why so many feel that they are loosing power.
The 40 on the Durango isnt really "loud" but it does have a nice rumble. Its about the same as my truck.

I don't think it is the muffler that is causing the loss, but the entire replacement from the cat back with larger pipes that cause the loss. That is where mine came from anyway. Sounds good though. I have the dynomax superturbo.

I'm looking at getting a new exhaust for the sole purpose of making it sound better. From what I've heard getting a freer flowing exhaust won't help until you get a freer flowing top end, at which point the exhaust will help.

I'm currently leaning towards a 2.5" flowmaster 40 series muffler with a larger than stock tip.

I don't know about all of you guys, but I want that sound generating from the engine, not the exhaust. Making your truck sound mean just from an exhaust is a simple riceboy manuever. You don't gain respect; only loose it. Because I sure do loose all respect for those Chebbies that are always rolling by with a loud ass exhaust and nothing to back that sound up.

Just my 2 cents.
