Subject: 450hp 5.9L
IP: Logged

Message:
I am planning on putting about a 450 hp 360 in my 01 R/T. Everyone that I talk to thinks that its a bad idea since my truck doesn't have but about 50,000 miles on it, they think that it will just screw stuff up since I am putting it together by myself. I would opt. for a supercharger but the cost for one of those would be about the same price that it would be for all of the parts that I need for the engine and I wouldn't have that much HP. The engine has nitrous or supercharger ready everything. Has anyone else put this much horse power on a stock transmission and how well will the stock tranny hold up or will it hold up at all? Please post suggestions.

Get a performance-built tranny/torque converter. You'll get more net performance out of the engine, and it'll hold up longer. A stocker with 50K and essentially double the power? Talk about "it" hitting the fan. Not saying it'll happen right away, but it'll age the tranny much faster.

Well from what I understand from a mopar preformance shop is that as long as you keep th
When I say the basics I mean like rpm limiter etc. The closer the engine is to stock rpm limits the better it will hold together. If you decide to throw a cam into the engine, use a hughes cam, they are a chrysler cam, not a e basics to the engine the same, you should not have any problems. gm cam like comp cams etc.
The transmissions should hold without any problems, just disengage the electronic OD till you pass 45-50 mph

I think its a bad idea for another reason - a 450hp 360 is going to be one peaky SOB - won't even work without a high stall torque converter and a low rear end. To get a heavy truck moving, you want torque - think about stroking, maybe 408 instead. You'll be about as quick with much better drivability.

I have a 380hp 1991 dakota with a 5.9liter engine in it and it is a hell of a lot of fun. I put in the mopar crate engine that is advertised in jegs and summit. It is a real strong runner, but it is kinda picky when it comes to tuning it because of the low vaccume from the big camshaft. And about the tranny, it will not hold. You will definately have to have one built. I recomend a A518 or an A618. these two trannys can be built to hold the horse power that you are looking for, and you will still have your overdrive. You will have to hook your overdrive and torque convertor lock up on two toggle switches and just turn them on when you want to use them. (thats what i did) When you get it going, send me some pictures. Any more questions, just let me know and I will see if i can help. I am glad to see another dakota enthusiast who is going to put some real horsepower in their rig. I am tired of hearing about people with K&N air cleaners and mobile 1 oil, and thinking that they have a bad ass truck.

Yeah Brad, and it's good to see some validation too. Thanks. Oh, while it costs a bit more than toggle switches, JVX (Jeeez, these guys should be paying me...I sound like a broken record), anyway, JVX carries a control unit that handles the lockup and overdrive functions. You can even adjust the speeds where these functions occur, and run with overdrive engaged during kickdown for better performance when passing.....Fords, Chevys...whatever.

I have a 5.9L that is probably running about the same hp. I am running a vortech with boost at 9.5, M-1 intake, mopar cam, 52TB, GSM headers, MSD wires w/autolite plugs, and a custom flashed PCM. Right now I have the stock tranny with the transgo shift kit and it feels great. I'm not saying it will hold up in the long run but for now it works.

gen1dak - what is the control unit you are talking about (JVX), do you think I would want one with my setup?

I assume your talking about 450hp at the crank?

If so why can't a supercharged motor achieve that?

Mine does!

I got my transmission rebuilt in May and had a Transgo shift kit put in. I saw a bad ass 6 speed manual for dakotas that I would like to put in that is if I had 4K. I calculated all the parts that I need for my engine and it comes to $3,718. Thats with the custom c&c connecting rods that cost about 1k. rtspeeddemon I'm not sure what your smoking if you think just a supercharger will give you that much power at the crank. A good supercharger gives you about a 40-45% increase in power. You should be looking at about 360hp at the crank and not 450.

99RT - The JVX tranny controller is aimed at people who want to run an overdrive tranny in non-computerized vehicles, or those that are doing stuff like running a carb in an otherwise computerized vehicle, or to take control of your pre-'96 tranny if you don't like the speeds the stock Magnum computer does things. It is intended for the pre-'96 style trannys. Oh how I wish it was a programmable unit for later models, but not yet, if ever. As far as I know, it doesn't work on '96 and later trannys.

Hmmm don't remember stating that the supercharger would be all alone. But they are all "Bolt Ons"

M1 2bbl
M1 B&G Flash
52MM TB
1.7 RR
Headers

This is with the stock cam & heads!

This combo with my ATI Procharger nets 377 Rear wheel HP and 421 TQ. Which I will convert to roughly 450 HP & 500 TQ at the crank.

Oh and yes I have dyno sheets available to prove!

oh so with ad ons besides the supercharger, If I put a supercharger on that motor I will be pushing about 660hp at the crank.......ah but I think that will be too much for a daily driven dakota. I may just go with about a 100 shot of the spray. That should put it at about 530 540 hp at the crank. Any how, do any of you people have a 94-2003 360 bare block for sale?

I think gutting a R/T and making it into something really race worthy is an excellent idea. My only advice is that you wait until you get at least 100k on that old 5.9 and then gut the engine. You paid for that tank of a engine, might as well let it work out another 50,000 and you could save some more money in the meantime.
