Message: Wow. Did I kick the bucket and end up in Dakota-owner heaven???
4 year owner of 1997 Silver SLT Club Cab w/5.2L . (No pics, sorry. :( ...do I have a Gen3, or a Gen 2???)
I'd like to start hanging here....I love this truck, but I've been piling 20-22K/year since I bought it, and just passed 140K driving back to CO from Mexico a week or two ago. Anyone offer advise on how to keep him happy? I'm still paying on it and have been considering a lease on a new Dak or Ram to drain out my negative eq.
But it'd be cheaper to keep him.
I installed a K&N air filter, get an injector service every year or so...apart from that (and 235 BFG AT's), it's pretty stock. I had horrible front-end issues (replaced ball joints @ 80K, Pittman arm, stabilizer arm...you name it...) and getting a litle cold-weather tranny hesistation. Engine strong. 3K oil changes like religion.
I'd really appreciate any lowing-hanging-fruit advise from other owners here....My wife thinks we need a quad Ram (river rafting) , but guess who has to pay for THAT upgrade??? ;)
Thanks and howdy from Colorado.

Message: Welcome to the site Bear! You have more miles than I have on my '93. I look forward to 140k. Maybe in a couple years.

Message: Thanks guys - you both have nice looking rigs (gotta say, never seen a dually Dakota before, Art...).
The hwy miles advise is well taken, but we do a fair amount of high-country driving as well - not so much 4 wheeling for its own sake, but lots of river and trail access roads.
I'm hearing that I should be expecting tranny problems soon (automatic). I did add a can of BG ATC fluid last winter, that helped with the hesistation I got, but I get the sense that I'm forestalling the inevitable rebuild.

Message: Thanx::the trans seem to be a problem. If they could make them as reliable as the 318 there would be a lot less trade in. might not hurt to change the filter & fluid in the trans.
