Message: hey people i got 2004 dakota quad cab ,32000 miles ,put upper ball joints on the driver side only, ther made by trw w/ lifetime warr- from discount auto parts, for about 45.00 each, didnt do the rest cause they werent bad and i hop the bottoms dont go bad considering ther alot more work cause they pressed in, i called the local dealer befor i did the job cause i had a leaking rack and a pinion seal bad also ,they saide to call diamler and maybe they would honer it cause i bought it as a left over and i only been out of warr- couple months,so i called diamler and they saide to take it to the dealer to look aT it (at 54 dollars an hour),cause they wont say yea or nea unless they see on paper from the dealer,so i was thinkin ,i know how this works....im gonna waist my time bringin it ther and pay the money and theyr gonna say nop-,so i spent the 48 bucks on the ball joint and 15.00 on the pinion seal from napa, and the rack was a bad o ring on the line ,screw them i not happy w/ ther quality ,its the first chrysler prod- ive owned ive been a gm fan for yrs and never had problems w/ them ,this trk- been back to dealer for numerous of problems luckly it was under warr-,im not happy w/ the pref- of the v-6 and 5 speed clunk/slop ,its a gas hog- and wheni have full crew it bottoms out over bumps, its like it got spring rated for a neon . i would def- think 2x on buying another prod-from them

Message: I've got 105K on my 99 & the uppers are just now a bit loose & I'm planning to replace them this weekend. Almost all the streams seems to be about the uppers, My question is: are their any similar problems with the lowers? Mine seem tight but I'm more than a bit concerned.

Message: Andy - good luck with GM, if that's what you're going back to. We have 9 Astro vans where I work; 5 of them had bad idler arms and other front end problems between 29,000 - 40,000 miles. Also a bad differential on a Chevy pick up; and replacement went bad too. Luckily we haven't had any of the loose motor knock Chevy trucks also have a reputation for. Maybe you'll get lucky.

Message: I have a 98 Durango which seems to have the same complaints about the ball joints. My uppers were really loose along with my lowers.
KAP I would recommend replacing uppers and lowers since you have 105K on the Dakota, I have 108K on my Durango and I just took the lowers out and they are horrible the stem just rotates around by natural gravity. The lowers are a pain to replace and no manuals really walk you through any of it. If you want some more info on the ball joints shoot me an email and I'll give you some points that will make your life easier. Just make sure you have someone willing to help you and that you have a huge press (for the lowers).

Message: If only there were a class action lawsuit for every single thing that failed on a vehicle! Who do you think ends up paying in the long run? WE DO!! The people who buy the cars will pay the premium for lawsuits! Do your car insurance or health insurance companies lose money with a lawsuit? NO! They just bump up the premiums to cover it. Car companies will do the same and increase the price of the vehicle. Why does everyone think that when a part on their car fails, someone else is to blame? The only reason everyone is making a big deal over the ball joint problem is because nightline or some other sensationalistic entertainment "news" program though it would be a good story. Yes, an extremely loose ball joint could pop out and cause an accident but a person talking on a cell phone and eating a whopper while driving can also. So should everyone start a class action against burger king? What the hell? Now a whopper value meal will cost $9. Yeah, lets show them who's boss and sue em. A couple of people will get some big bucks and the rest of us will have to pay for it! Sorry for the rant just tired of reading about lawsuits and s#$t.

Message: Hey spam, thanks for the info. I actually replaced the uppers day before yesterday after work... I had to drive some 300 miles yesterday & just didn't feel safe so I decided to dive in & work as late as necessary. Fortunatly, It only took about 2 hours, not including running down the parts. Boy was I shocked at the old units... The passengers side didn't look to bad for a 100K+ zerk-free ball joint but the driverside dang near fell apart in my hands! One more pothole & I could be chasing tires, front shafts, etc.... Yowzaa! Anywho..., I checked my lower units while I had the spindle without a load on it & they're still tight. (Having a zerk & using it does seem to be an improvement.) Thanks for the offer of help.
