Subject: RPM and Power Steering? IP: Logged
Message: Probably a stupid question, but I notice that when I am sitting still at idle and I turn the steering wheel either way, my rpms jump up to about 800 and when I let it go back to center, the rpms drop back to idle (about 600). Is this normal? Is this just the rpms jumping up when the power steering pump kicks in?

Message: When you turn the wheel your putting load on the engine with the powersteering pump, and the computer compensates by opening the idle air control valve to bring the rpms a bit. In other words its completely normal

Message: Yeah, there is actually a pressure switch on the power steering. The switch sends a signal to the computer and when all is said and done it raises the idle a bit to compensate for the added load. Like Pat said!
