Subject: Anti-Slip differential IP: Logged
Message: Hi,
I just replaced my 98 Dakota V6 2wd with an 03 Dakota V8 4WD.
The old one had and anti-slip differential. The new one doesn't. I just noticed with wet roads that my tires break free too easy on acceleration.
Question... is there an aftermarket company that makes anti-slip differential kits for my Dakota?
Also... how do I determine what my ratio is?
And one more thing... Is there anything to do to the front drivetrain with this mod?
I checked with a Dodge dealer and found the parts are a shade over $600 plus from 2 to 3 hrs labor. I am looking for alternatives.
I suppose there is the bone yard option... does anyone know if there have been changes in the diffenential through the last few years?

Message: What rear axle do you have? The only cheaper option for the 8.25 rear ends is the powertrax unit for about 400 bones. Other options available if youve got the 8.75 or larger.
Axle ratio should be on sticker under hood, in driver's doorjamb or in glovebox, depending on model.

Message: I was surprised to discover that most of the 4x4 Dakotas and Durangos did NOT have LSD! I had to really look for mine. Doesn't make sense to me.
Anyway, go to any differential shop and they can add it for you. Should cost about $300-400 P&L. Add another $150-200 for a gear change. It's important that the gear ratio in the front match the one in the rear. Changing ratio's in a 4x4 can get expensive.

Message: I have an Auburn unit in my 9.25 with 3.55's. Had it purchased and installed at a diesel service garage. I think it was around $600 for parts and labor. It works great but this unit needs GM or Ford limited slip additive or it gets noisy plus those are the two that Auburn recommends.

Message: You can always go with the Dana Trac Loc, its the factory unit that Dodge puts in the Kota's, for a 9.25 rear end the trac loc will run ya 150.00 on 4wheel parts...

Message: When I went from 3.55's to 4.10's in my 2 wd, 2000 Dak I had the Dana Trac Loc installed. The Dana cost about $150, as Silversurfer stated. Changing gears at both ends is cost prohibitive, unless you just can't live with the ratio you have. I'm not sure how much the install of the Dana by itself would be, as I had the gears changed at the same time.

Message: I have an open diff in my D right now, I also have a locking diff on the ground. (Burned out pinion bearings.) It look like I can just swap the guts to make the open diff a locking one. I pulled all the center spider gears but the main unit just won't come out. Looks like something is holding it in. Any ideas?
Thanks

Source yourself a differential locker from Detroit lockers or powertrax. they are much more effective. Do your homework before you buy, cause these units aren't for the "lady driven" trucks. Good lukk

I've got a powertrax in my 95 dak. I have no problems but the parents can't handle it.
I'm afriad my ma will wind up doing donuts into a ditch if it ever snows here.
They're great for traction, but you have to learn how to drive all over again.

Message: Hello all you Dodge Boys, I have a 2002 4X4 Quad cab Dakota, I live in Minnesota and just after winter the Pinion bearings started going bad real fast I don;t know why this would happen so fast ? it has 127000 miles on it, the one wheel wonder is not worth a crap in any kind of bad weather, so I have to use the 4X4 a lot but I try very hard not to use it when ever I can, So as long as it needs work I would like to change it to some kind of Limmited slip, I'm used to driving a vehical with Posi so no worries there at all, can you give me some ideas on what to use, Thanks much PS I have a Auto Trans and the 4.7 V8 in my Dakota sounds like you guys know what you are talking about thats why I ask. Thanks again
