Message: Hey guys need some help. I cranked up the ole R/T yesterday morning. Put it in Drive and it wouldn't go. You can gas it up to around 3.5 grand on the RPMs and i will go about 5 miles an hour. It also does the same thing in neutral or in that case 2nd and 1st too. I know its something in the transmission. Any one have this happen before? Or know what it could be, Im hoping i don't have to replace the whole thing.

Message: anything smell hot? what color is the tranny fluid? (supposed to be red)...does it smell burnt?...I had a similar problem but not quite in my 97 5.2 CC 4x4 when my clutch packs were on their last leg...check and see if it goes in reverse...mine would only go in reverse....so I ended up replacing the tranny with a brand new one since it was only a couple hundred more than just buying new clutch packs...

Message: It sounds like the transmission fluid is draining out of the torque converter when the truck sits for a while. I've just started having this problem myself. There's supposedly a drainback check valve that is sticking and causing this to happen. Next time you start your truck, first try to drive normally. If it is still only moving slowly, stop, put it in neutral, and hold the RPMS about 1500 for one minute. This should pump more fluid into the converter. This has worked for me until I can find out more about changing that check valve.

Message: Thanks for the help, the funny thing is when i put it in neutral it wants to go like it is in drive. That leads me to believe there is something majorly wrong with the tranny. But, it did do that and i let it run for a while and then it was fine. And When i got to work and went on my lunch break it was doing it again and hasn't worked since but, i haven't let it run to see if that would do it. I will try it to day, thanks.

Message: Same boat here. My '96 CC 5.2L would just creep until I got to about 45 MPH, then it would go. Think my TQ is shotsville, but tranny isnt far behind.
I'm looking at $1800 for a stock rebuild or $2900 for a SMR tranny/TQ package. Still haven't decided yet.
And remove that checkball, it'll burn up a tranny quicklike.

Message: You guys will like this. I decided to pull the R/T to a local dodge dealer ship last night. Got there and unhooked the chain. Some friends were trying to push it backwards in to a parking space and i decided since if i gas on it, it will move a tad bit so i was going to help them. Gased on it and they liked to have busted thier faces on the asphalt because to took off spinning like nothing was wrong. Wierd huh? Went up to the dodge dealer this morning to have them look at it. Cranked it up and it went back to doing the same thing again. So now im waiting on them to give me a verdict of whats wrong.

Message: Hey daychad, It sounds to me like you have either a clutch pack problem, or their is something lodged in the valve body of the transmission. When you said that it would go forward when the tranny is in neutral, that is a clear sign that the valve body in your tranny is not working properly. It could have some dirt or some small part of your transmission lodged in on to the ports causing it to partially engage the forward clutch at all times. When you did your little test and reved it up in gear and then you smelled something hot, you probably roasted out your clutch packs. Sorry dude, but but if your clutches were not burt, they are now. I had a similar problem with my dak and it is getting fixed right now, should have it back late today. Clutches are not to spendy to replace, but since you have drove it a little bit, you might have fried more stuff. You might want to replace your torque convertor now. because it is probably full of particles now.

Message: yeah join the club, I bought my 01 R/T used about a year ago for a used car lot in westside atlanta (that was a scary ride). Any ways I got about 2 miles from my house and then going up a hill it all of the sudden wouldn't go anymore. So, I had to drive it the rest of the way home in reverse. You will probably have to get the whole transmission rebuilt, they told me at the transmission shop that it was just the torque converter was busted and then when they finally got it fixed it cost about $1,500 for a complete rebuild. I would recomend putting a trans go shift kit in it when you go to the transmission shop not only does it make quicker harder shifts it also increases the life of the crappy dodge 360 transmissions.

Message: I am on my 5th, YES 5TH! Trans in my 92 Dak. I have a total of 2500 miles combined on all 5. The first 3 were rebuilt and the last 2 were brand new. Those A518 trans' are JUNK!! Every trans I replaced I put in a new converter, flushed the lines. I replaced the cooler 4 times(1st one I didn't replace, just flushed). My 99 Dak. started slipping at 30K. I had the dealer just replace it before it blew. Now at 90K its doing ok, surprisingly! My 92Dak just sits now. Its got 80K miles on it, and I know once I put another tranny in it. It will just blow up again.. What do you do?
