Subject: Cleaning a 4.7 Throttle Body IP: Logged
Message: Hey all,
I was just wondering if anyone has some info on this, as to what will be needed and what tools. I would like to do this to see if it helps with the idle problem that I have had since the 3000 mile mark (i now have 22000 miles on the truck). Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Message: Engine off. Remove the air hat, push throttle body butterfly wide open. Spray carb/injector cleaner around opening and down the throat. Wrap a small rag, like t-shirt material, around one or two fingers. Reach inside the throttle body as far as you can and swab clean. Repeat until the rag comes out clean.

Message: Thanks for the reply, the only thing about that which would worry me is if it is really dirty, some of the dirt might to drip into the manifold. I don't think that this would be a good thing.
I also could have sworn that it had been mentioned before to take the throttle body off and clean it that way.
Anyway, thanks again.

Message: Just remove the throttle body. Doesn't take long at all. Mine was pretty dirty first time I did it and it did help with my rough idle and a slight stumble it had off idle. I think I'll do it again this weekend... maybe change the plugs too.

Message: Thanks for the reply J,
I think that I may try to clean it tonight... I am also going to put in some new plugs. I am going with the ACDelco Rapidfire Platinum plugs to see if they help any. Just out of curiosity, are there any gaskets that need to be replaced when taking the throttle body off?

Message: It's not recommended to run Platinum plugs on the 4.7. The coil packs don't produce enough spark or something along the lines of that.

Message: Pardon my ignorance about this subject... But how often and why should the throtle body be cleaned? My truck is near 30K miles. It runs great. But now that I think of it, sometimes it'll stumble at idle after a minute or so. Nothing bad, but a little stumble none the less. Is this a symptom?

Message: Hey Modain,
Having a clean throttle body is never a bad thing (you know that it wont be stuck if it's clean). As for it helping with the stumbling... I guess that I'll find out soon enough, my truck had started stumbling a little about a couple months ago so I figured it was time to clean it.

Message: What was happening to mine was at "cold" start up, and ONLY in the mornings, the engine would start-up fine then a few seconds later almost die, then I guess the computer would "sense" this and rev way up, like 2500 rpm to keep it from dying. I was ready to take it to the dealer when I went to buy some tools and try to fix it myself (after I had found the website below) when the mechanic told me just try some GUMOUT INTAKE CLEANER and give it a try, first!
He told me that if your not careful and torque that bolts back to 8.5 lbs. per sq. in the seals would not be tight between the throttle body and the intake. So, I tried it and it worked GREAT problem totally went away. Just read the directions CAREFULLY first. The engine might die when you spray to much cleaner so have someone revving the engine for you to keep it going. Here is that great website that explains step by step on how to not only clean a throttle body for a 4.7L Durango and/or Dakota, but how also to take it off, what to look out for and what NOT to do.

He told me that if your not careful and torque that bolts back to 8.5 lbs. per sq., the seals would not be tightened correctly between the throttle body and the intake. So, I tried it and it worked GREAT problem totally went away, it was the IAC (IDLE AIR something), It just got dirty. Just read the directions CAREFULLY first. Message: IAC is idle air control. While proper torquing to spec is a good idea, I don't think they're that fussy - didn't use a torque wrench on mine, and no problems. You can feel the gasket compressing, then you just don't want to over do it and snap or strip the small fasteners.

Message: When cleaning the IAC motor, be careful not to twist the plunger when cleaning. The document that I saw said that twisting the plunger could mess it up.
The Canada Speedtweeks web site may still have an faq on this.

Message: Your idle may just be set a little low then - try adjusting it up slightly. I had to do that to get a TB from a manual truck to run right with my auto tranny.

Message: Yup, I know, I'm bringing back an old post....
I finally found a fix for my low idle, a SuperChips tuner. My 02 4.7 auto idles steady at ~600rpms now with the Perf program installed.
In the past, if the AC/defrost was not on, after it warmed up and I came to a stop, the idle would drop down to ~400rpms. It would stay there unless I blipped the throttle, or shifted into N and back to D.
