Message: I've had a '92 5.2 and now '01 4.7. The torque curve is slightly different. The 5.2 felt a little stronger below 2000 rpm; after that, about equal. Air intake and exhaust improvements make the 4.7 feel like more cubes.

Message: Anyone who has read many of my posts knows the 318 is my personal darling. I drove a 4.7 a couple years ago and it was really nice. One main advantage with going 318 is the huge reserve of performance parts and the inherent savings over a newer engine. You've all seen how that goes. The 4.7 has almost as good a rod ratio as the 318, and it's a willing runner. I'd say it's a worthy successor to the 318, so it's personal preferences and plans for mods vs cost. Can't go wrong either way as far as I can tell.

Message: I've owned 2 5.2's, and they were killer engines. I have a 4.7 now and so far just as good, maybe better in the mpg area. I am still waiting on the mods to come around for the 4.7, but until then, I'd say they are dead even in performance considering you can add so much to a 318. Do whatever feels best for you. Me personally, I think that the 4.7 will cost me less money in the long run, gas/performance upgrades/and random engine fixes.

Im thinking Im going to go with a newer truck, 01-02. And Im kinda playing around with the idea of getting one new. Im planning on keeping whatever I buy for a long time, probabaly 20 years or more. so buying new might actually be worth it, just to get exactly what I want.
but then dakotas are a dime a dozen out here. seems to be 5 of them on every used car lot, so I might be able to find what I want used.

Message: Blu,
Sounds like you're researching it fairly well. Just don't think about the 3.9, sorry guys.
No offense for the smart alec response before.
I'm really into my 4.7, I don't see how you wouldn't be happy with one, the 5 speed, manual, right?

nope I wont even look at one if it has the 3.9 or 2.5, I want a v8. im tired of being passed by semi trucks while going up hills. And yeah it will be a manual. I didnt like the way the auto tranny felt in the one I tried.

Message: My woman wouldn't let me get a 5-speed manual.
But I kind of like my 5-speed auto. I hear it has less power loss than the previous 4-speed auto. My auto seems to have a sh*t load of gears to use. It doesn't jump in and out of OD while towing like previous trannies.
I'd like the manual for performance reasons but this new auto is the best overdrive auto I've ever driven.

Message: Still pleased with my 4.7. It has a different auto tranny than the one that comes behind the 5.2 you tried, so you might want to try one if you see one you like.
