Subject: What other mods should I do? IP: Logged
Message: Soon I will be getting a Hypertech Power Programmer III. What other mods should I get along with it or soon after it? Intake, Exhaust, others? My truck is a 99 318 4x4. I don't want an all out racing truck just a little more power.
Thanks for the help.

Message: M1 2bbl intake. Take your pick with exhaust (headers are a nice plus, but if you're not gonna add a cam, a good cat.-back system will be fine). 180 degree thermostat. Maybe some roller rockers? Depends on your budget.

Message: Oh yeah, update the ignition. MSD makes some good stuff. Get some better plug wires too (8mm).

Message: gen1dak - Why do you say not to get headers if you get a cam?

Message: Yeah, you've got to wonder. Headers should be a nice gain for a 318 with or without a cam change; whereas a cam change would probably require other changes for everything to work well together (gearing, high stall torque converter).

Message: i would definately go with the headers and exhaust, that would probably give you the best results, without cracking into the old girl. If you want to keep your low end i would recommend that you keep the stock intake on.
And get the mopar pcm, not the hypertech

Message: Actually, the stockers flow very well(just look at the pre-magnum manifolds--yuck!)....not as well as headers. Don't get me wrong, headers are a great add-on. The biggest part of the restriction in the stock system is behind the cat. If you went full-boat front to rear, I know you'd have more power than just a cat-back system. Still, headers are at their best when the pursuit of ultimate power, mostly in the upper ranges. (Note I said mostly). If you're talking about improving upper rpm power, a good cam will add 50hp. Headers will add about 20 over the stockers. These are all relative numbers. I guess it boils down to how you want to do it. Adding headers will boost power, but if you're not getting more into the engine (a la bigger cam, your results are more limited. That's just me. If I were building an engine up, I'd get a hotter cam and do external improvements later. That way I can be using it sooner, and unlocking potential power as I went. If I had no plans on going into the engine, sure, I'd do the best exhaust I could to get the most out of what was there.
