Subject: '91 5.2 Starts Hard IP: Logged
Message: My '91 5.2 starts hard. I don't mean that it is hard to start. It sounds like the engine is trying to kick back against the starter while cranking. When it starts it almost acts as if it is going to backfire, but doesn't. I don't know if my description makes any sense or not. After it starts it runs great. Anyone got any ideas?

Message: The engine is stock. The plugs, wires, caps, computer, O2 sensor, MAP sensor, coolant temp. sensor, fuel pressure regulator, TPS are all new. It has 118,000 miles; compression is 145 pounds on all cylinders but one...it reads 140 and takes a little longer to pump up than the others.

Message: Have you tested the battery/alt yet? Sounds almost like a low amp problem. Or, Posably a starter issue (wrong shims or wrong size). That's all I got

Message: I was hoping somebody else could help.
I was originally thinking you had high compression slugs in your engine, but 145 psi doesn't match that.
Then I thought your timing belt may have had it, but 118k wouldn't put you there either.
No ideas here.

Message: Thanks for the feedback. Battery, timing chain, and starter are also new. I was wondering if the problems could be caused by a faulty Hall Effect pickup in the distributor.

Message: From my experience, a faulty Hall effect pickup is either on or off. Checked the timing lately? Is it any different when the engine is hot or cold?

Message: The timing is set at 18 degrees BTDC. It is supposed to be set at 10, but runs like crap at that setting...stumbles, hesitates, no power and the starting problem I mentioned at first is worse.

Message: Your timing is adjusted by the computer. You must set the distributor in the right spot EXACTLY where it triggers the magnetic pickup,or it will stumble.I have a tech bulletin from dodge for this.I'll have to look for it tomorrow.Basically you set #1 cyl. to tdc compression, then you turn the motor by hand-and look for a "v8" mark on the harmonic balancer-line this mark up with "0" on the tab-then set distributor-this may be your problem. I will look for the bulletin tomorrow,it explains it better!

Message: Thanks 4x4. My '91 is a pre-mag engine...does the tech bulletin apply to it? I hope so because that sounds like it could be the problem.

Message: the distributor does not have to be exact. i just put a new distributor in my truck, 91 5.2, and also put a new msd. 18 degrees is like too much timing, the computer is not adjusting the timing unless you are on the gas. at idle or start up the initial timing is run directly from the distributor. set the timing back down to around 12 degrees and see what it does. im also a tech at a dodge house in dallas.

Message: Thanks slowdakota. I pulled the distributor this weekend just to check things. I reinstalled it and set the timing to 12 and it did help. Occasionally, usually on first start up in the mornings, it Starts hard, but it is a lot better. I found the plastic plate on the hall effects pickup cracked...nothing completely broken but noticable cracks where it screws to the distributor. My timing mark fluctuates back and forth between 10 and 14. Could the cracks be causing this?

Message: I have a 91 dak that had a 5.2, and it now has a 360. As far as your hard starting, it sounds like you are talking about hard cranking. Your timing being set at 18 degrees is probably causing that, because it is suppose to be set somewhere around 12 i believe.(maybe 10, good idea to check a repair manual) As far as your dakota not running good when you do that, that is probably a problem with the timing advance system. I do belive that that is controlled by the computer, and as far as fixing that i don't know where to tell you to start. Part of your hard cranking problem could be caused by low amperage like another person mentioned earlier. If your pickup has 118000 miles on it, it might be time to change your battery cables. Another potential problem is your starter. Is it the original? Dodges have a habit of not wanting to start when the starter gets a little weak and does not spin the engine quite fast enough.

Message: Thanks Brad. The starter is new...had the same problem with the old one. You are right, it is more of a hard cranking than a hard starting. It sounds to me like something wrong with the timing advance system but the computer was replaced shortly before I bought the truck about 4 months ago so, unless it is defective it should be okay. The truck was doing it when I bought it but I thought it would be an easy fix. Go figure.
