i have a 98 dakota sport 4x4 extra cab with 318 5.2 I get pinging pretty much all the time under light load, not as bad under heavy acceleration. I changed cap, rotor and put in Autolites, still no help. Any one know where to begin?

Hi, ce98dak open up the hood and look down into the throttle body. If you have oil or a light film of it chances are you plenum gasket is leaking under the intake manifold. I have the same ping problem that i haven't repaired yet. You can do two things. Change the plenum gasket with an aftermarket one and not the dealer one or change the intake manifold completly for an M1 intake manifold from mopar which doesn't use any plenum gasket. I would go for the second route because get rid of that gasket completly and also gain some more power in conjunction with a new 50mm throttle body in the future. I will be definatly going that route when i get some LOOT!
Also check for oil consumption if your losing oil and its not leaking anywhere the plenum gasket is probably gone. I hope this info helps good luck

Try replacing the throttle position sensor (TPS) on your throttle body. I had the same problem, the dealer kept suggesting that it was the plenum/belly pan gasket. They replaced it twice but still have the pinging. But as soon as I replaced the TPS, the pinging was gone.

I noticed when it pings I get smoke coming from the tail pipe. I can see the smoke behind me in the car behind me headlights when it is dark out. I really do not use any oil between changes at 3000 miles. There is a slight oil film on the one side where the PCV valve goes into the intake, but not oil on the entire intake bottom.
