Subject: do I need a new exhaust system?
IP: Logged

Message:
The person who had my truck before me really neglected it. I think I need to replace the muffler...

I'd like to get an inexpensive exhaust system that sounds nice and adds hp and torque, but I'm also concerned about mileage and durability. Which system should I go with? Should I replace the muffler only? And, if the catalytic converter looks just as rusted and beat up as the muffler, should I replace it, too?
Please have some mercy on someone who is mechanically skilled but has no product knowledge!

An intelligent answer to the cat question could depend on the milage. If the muffler leaks, replace it, but don't blame it on neglect. They can be expected to rust out as they get older. Before we start talking about HP and torque, what motor do you have ?

Well I say the truck was neglected based on the condition of the spark plugs, plug wires, coolant, oil and air filter when I bought it. Looking at those split seams on the muffler, I thought the same thing. Then again I don't have a lot of exp with mufflers! It's a 99 Dakota Sport ext cab 4x4 v8 5.9L with 67K miles. I plan on buying a new muffler, but was wondering if I should go for a whole new system after reading so many posts about the importance of good exhaust systems. I'm told that catalytic convertors are supposed to be good for the life of the vehicle, but if I'm replacing the muffler with something to increase performance, should I replace other parts, too?

That motor should respond well to a less restrictive exhaust. How much you want to upgrade will depend on your budget then.
