I've been waiting 8 years for a Dakota and I just got one. Its a 1997 Dakota SLT 5.2 engine has open weel wells to the engine and when I was going through a pot hole of water the engine stalled out. Water definitly got onto the heads and engine due to steam. The truck took several minutes to restart and runs fine on normal roads wet or dry. Electrical problem?? Alternator?? Any help would be great.

I think I would get new fender wells installed. They shouldn't be open into the engine as you describe. Why don't you go take any vehicle, start it up and dump a bucket of water on the engine and see how well it runs!!! Quit driving through holes of water.

That's a good ticket to a crack heads, headers, or exhaust manifold.

Water shouldn't stall the engine unless it got onto your coil maybe and definitely into distributor cap.

Alternator even if shorted, your engine should use the battery until it runs out of juice, in most cases.

Water on you spark plugs can cause arcing of the spark onto the engine, but it should still run, even if it caused bad idling.

Water probably got into your air intake. the 98 Ram I used to have would do that when I went through a high pressure touchless car wash.

But what if I like to drive through holes of water???

My Nissan and S-10 do not have the same problem and I have never heard of this problem before. I have checked the air filter when this happened and there was no water to be found.

Is it then logical to think that maybe one of the wire harnesses is shorting out near the manifold and when dried out due to the heat the engine is able to be restarted??
I have no idea of what the problem could be..
