Message: The big variable is how you drive it. I have the 5.9L in my QC 4x4 and i'm getting just over 14 MPG. Not towing/hauling anything. mix of city/highway driving. No jackrabbit starts, etc. If you respect it, it won't be bad. If you get on it, that sucking sound you hear is your money at the gas pump.
All in how you drive.

Message: I had a '93 5.2 dak sport... lucky to get 14 MPG, but by the time I owned it after my brother i had 175K on it. Dependability was worth it, but my delivery job didn't cover gas so I got a honda crx. I have so much more money now.
I have heard of a 94 dak that runs a 7 in the 1/4 with a 502 i think... I wonder how that guy does in gas mileage.

Message: I have pulled 21 with a 92 CC 4x2 with the 318.
20 is much more repeatable.
16-17 mixed city with stop and go highway bursts.
I never drive straight city so I couldn't tell you that.

Message: I just traded in my 2002 Nissan Frontier 4 cyl.
2 WD for a 2003 Dodge Dakota Sport 4x4 with the 287 (4.7L)V-8. The reason I need more power is to trailer my antique car around to shows.
The Nissan could barely pull itself around never mind anything else. The good thing about the Nissan was the gas mileage (20-24 mpg).
The Dodge with the 4.7 V-8 gives 14-19 mpg.,but it's so nice to step on it and have it launch.
Love it so far.

Message: We get around 15mpg, I have an 02 Dakota 4x4 with a 4.7, an auto overdrive. We have a high of 19.2 mpg driving 55mph. to a low of 13.1. We just drove 140 miles and got 16.3 at 70 mph. We got rid of a Ford Ranger for the same reason as the Nissan went to a new home, couldn't get out of it's own way. If you want something with power in this size Toyota or Dodge, for us it was Dodge.

Message: I have a heavy foot and get about 13-14mpg with my 99' 5.2L 4x4 with 3.55 gears. I do have 32 inch tires on it which might be killing the mileage a bit.

Message: They have this new feature on message boards now called "Search". I haven't personally tried it yet, but you should. There have been so many posts on gas mileage, they should have their own separate board.
If you buy a truck, unless it's 4 cylinders, don't expect the greatest mileage. Common sense. If you want mileage, get a KIA.

Message: kota318: It seems those taller tires have done a number on your speedometer setting; turning too slow=low mpg numbers.

Message: I have a 99 Dak 5.2L 4x4 with 32 inch tires and 3:55 gears. KN FIPK, 3 inch body lift, and 3 inch single side gibson exhaust.
In the city I get 10-11 mpg and on the highway I get 13-14 mpg. When I tow the boat I'm lucky to get 8-10 mpg.
I'm at 97,300 miles. I think when I first go the truck I was getting 17-18 tops on the freeway so my milage has dropped over 4 years but it's a truck what do you expect.
It's sad though that a big dodge 3500 Ram dually diesel can get 15 - 21 and I can't.
