Subject: 2002 Durango Trans Dipstick Not Seating
IP: Logged

Message:
I was checking the fluid levels on my new Durango and noticed that the Transmission Dipstick would not fully seat into the top of the filler tube. Is this a common problem? Is there a simple fix?

My 2000 Dakota does the same thing...it will almost seat, but not quite. I mentioned it to the dealer once and they ordered a new dipstick that was supposedly redesigned to correct that problem. New dipstick does the same thing. I've never had a problem with it...no trans fluid shooting out and no leaks at all. The issue is supposedly covered under a TSB, but the fix doesn't eliminate the problem. For legal protection for yourself just in case trans fluid comes shooting out of the tube, causes an engine fire, totals the truck, and kills all passengers, mention the problem to the dealer and make sure it gets noted on a service order. If they attempt to fix the problem but the fix doesn't change a thing, make sure that gets mentioned on a service order as well.

You really want a fix for it?? Just cut about 3/8" off the bottom of the dipstick. Problem solved!!! I've done it on mine and it seats all the way now. The reason it doesn't seat all the way is the dipstick is hitting the bottom of the transmission pan.
