Subject: 2002 Durango Engine Break-In
IP: Logged

Message:
The owner’s manual is somewhat vague on the Engine break-in process. They say to drive moderately for the first 300 miles. After the initial 60 miles speeds up to 55 mph are desirable. While cruising, brief full-throttle acceleration contributes to a good break-in.

Does anyone have more specific information / procedures that I can follow to ensure the optimum engine break-in?

after the break in period, change to Mobil 1
synthetic oil and Mobil 1 filter as soon as
possible! its the best thing you can ever do for
your engine!

Only thing you need to know:

Drive it like you own it. If you go easy on it, the seals won't set right. Always keep your rpms changing so they don't set at a set rpm. Never put it in cruise on the highway and don't let it warm up in the morning for the first 500.

Break in period - approximately the time it takes the engine to turn over till the time the accelerator hits the floor.

Good posts here... listen to dk... he knows what he is saying... I did the same. Also, just btw... on brand new Hummers there is a message that says for the first 500 miles, do not drive at a constant speed for any significant amount of time... I recall something about going over 55 mph also, and how you shouldnt do it often. But this is on a government vehicle... they dont know what they are talkin about :) Hope this helps.

Dodge Caravan 3.3 Break-IN
IP: Logged

Message:
I just purchased a 2003 Dodge Caravan with the 3.3 liter engine. Owners manual has this statement in the section on Break-In. "Wide Open throttle acceleration in low gear can be detrimental and should be avoided." Can anyone advise exactly what that means as respects "detrimental". And, are they talking about the Low gear (1st gear) or about starting out in Drive (D)? Thanks very much!

detrimental as far as ripping out your tranny and low gas milage, but that can happen any time you hit it wide open. Low gear can be used in either the low or drive position after all you don't leve the intersection in 4th with the converter locked up! so any time you are going less then about 40 don't hit the thottle hard as it can downshift all the way to first/low at speed below that
