Subject: 3.55 or 3.92 w/5-speed IP: Logged
Message: I know this topic has been posed by the dozens, but the
majority of the them have been for automatics.. I am
ordering a 04 CC 4.7, 5-speed, LSD on thursday. What is a
better choice 3.55 or 3.92? 80% of my driving is highway at
75 Mph, while the rest is "stop and go." I dont tow
anything, aside from carrying heavy loads off and on, I just
want a decent performing truck, I have a v6cc, and the
highway grunt leaves something to be desired.. is it wise to
get the 3.92? even though I do so much highway driving?

Message: Get the 3.92's. The 5.7 loves to rev. I had an '02 similar to what you want to order, with 3.92. I still got good gas mileage.

Message: If you want to have fun in it, get the 3.92's. Raps out fast and really puts the torque down. You can accelerate effortlessly in 5th on the highway too. None of that down shiftin crap needed.
Upgrade your engine to synthetic after break in and your rear diff to synthetic fluid. Your mileage will go way up and the limited slip will work much better. I am up to 20mpg on the highway, 22 if there are cars in front of me. I'm partial to AMSOIL.

Message: I beg to differ, the 1st gear on manuals are generally much lower then automatics, as in the case with the dakota, therefore you should have plenty of torque and performance with the 3.55's, if it is an auto then definately you need the 3.92's but with the manual 3.55s should be fine, as well as much better highway mpg which you do a lot of. Some of the manuals with the 3.92's complain they barely use 1st gear for much of anything

Message: 00 5spd. i went from 3.21s to 3.92s. i love them. one of the best mod i've done. i added a lsd while i was at it. go with the 3.92s i use first gear all the time. i can start from second without a problem. but i can't say i complain about never using 1st. most autos go with the 4.10s. so in conclusion get the 3.92s

Message: I had a '92 5.2 auto w/3:55, and now own a '01 4.7 5-spd. 3:92 RC. On the highway, the 3:92 turns about 300 more rpm, not enough to worry about. My truck gets 19-20 hwy and 18-19 city, with Flowmaster 70 duals and homebrew alloy K&N intake. That's on the stock 255/65/16's. I plan on putting on 17x9's w/275/55/17 to keep the 29" diameter. CC's are slightly heavier than RC's, so you will enjoy the 3:92's. BE SURE to get the LSD rear end. Save your clutch and start out in first every time; just chalk it up to a little more exercise for your left leg and right arm. 5-speed Daks are more fun than a health club anyway LOL :)

Message: Remember too, you're going to have 31" tires with your 4x4, so the 3.92's work out nice.

Message: Hey Pittdawg. The 3.92's paid off when I took a Z06 to 25mph at the track. The torque they put down is amazing. It makes street racing a joke. Has to be a super badass car to bother fooling with off the line.
I agree with 01 Motorsport, use first gear, its better for the truck. I have had 2nd pop out on its own a few times trying to take off that way. Not good for anything. I just take off in first and short shift to 2nd or let it rev and bump to 3rd. 5 speed rules.

Message: I love my 5-speed so much, that if D-C makes a Hemi Dak someday, I'll pass on the automatic if that's the only tranny available! I test drove a '03 R/T a few months back. After 2 miles I was reaching for the "phantom lever".
