Message: The way you described it(whirling noise but not turning engine over) it sounds like The starter is spining but not engaging the flywheel. Get some one to crank it over while you go under and check to see if thats the case. Check to see if everything is hooked up properly at the starter.

Message: Had the same problem on a '91 5.2. When removed from the truck and hooked to a battery it appeared to work great. When it was reinstalled on the truck it would spin but not turn the engine over. It was a bad starter drive. I replaced the starter and had no more problems.

Message: Does it sound like there is just no compression when it turns over? I've seen where guys get their distributor 180 degrees off, and it just spins the starter like you describe.
Replace the starter drive, and if you still have a problem double check your distributor.

Message: Could be missing a tooth on the flywheel, try moving the truck a little in gear so the flywheel turns a few degrees then try to start again.
