Subject: 4.7 V8 Noise IP: Logged
Message: I recently noticed a faint hum/buzz/whine coming from the engine/transmissions of my 2002 Dakota. I have a 4.7L V8. It seems to be the worst when I am accelerating between about 1000 and 2000 RPMs. It isn't real loid, but I do notice it when the radio is turned down or off. Any ideas what this might be?
I also get a rattling noise from the engine area when pulling my boat up long hills?

Message: I forgot to mention that when this started somethting very strange happened. I got off work and started my truck up. Radio wasn't working so I put in a CD. The CD was had a bunch of static and it changed with acceleration. I turned the truck off and back on. The radio seemed normal, but the noise described above was now happening? Probably not related, but I also seem to get socked a little every time I get out of the truck and shut the door. The noise is there if the radio is on or not.

Message: The rattling noise you describe on uphill towing is likely detonation (knocking). Harmful to your engine; you should use a higher octane gas if you experience that.

Message: That noise that increases with rpm's is Alternator wine. You have a short somewhere or a bad ground. Hard to diagnose in a stock vehicle. Could be just about anything. Most likely you are getting electrical interference into your stereo system. Probably a pinched wire. If you touch something metal in your truck before you get out, it will keep you from getting shocked.
