I have a 2000 Dakota 4.7l, I drove through a small stream rather fast the other day (one I crossed many times with my old subaru) and the truck sucked in some water. My truck stalled but started back up, I headed on my way and about a quater mile down the road the check engine light came on. I didn't think alot about it until I noticed my truck is now getting ~5 mpg. I also notice when I start it up or step on the gas it blow very black smoke. I am assumming this means it is running very rich. I tried to buy a book over this and all the local auto parts stores say there is not one out yet. Does anyone know how to check the trouble code and a place the codes are listed? Any help with what might be wrong would also be appreciated.
Thanks in Advance,
Dennis

Key on off on off on will set code in odometer display. Many codes posted on this site if you do a search, also available at obdii.com and other sites.

Does any one have any idea's on how to fix these?
Thanks,

Take the electrical connectors off the TB and shoot them with WD-40 - water may have gotten in there. It could be as simple as water in these or some other connections (the sensors for those first 2 codes are on the TB).

I had a similiar problem. It was the pre O2 sensor, also check your oil mine had a lot of raw fuel in it. Mine was showing that I was getting 5 MPG also.

I recently had a similar problem with my 4.7l Dakota,
and it was a bad oxygen sensor on the passenger side in front of the cat.
What code are you getting from the mil ?
Does is state which bank is the problem.
i.e. P0171 is lean bank #1 (drivers side)
P0174 is lean bank #2 (passenger side)

I was just looking for the O2 sensor, and there doesn't seem to be one on the Y pipe. Can someone tell me where it is?
Thanks,

HI,
I found 2 O2 sensors, one before and one after the cat (I pulled it in the road and got under it when it was not raining). I still did not see any on the Y pipe, is it possible there are only two? If so how do I know which one is giving me trouble?
Dennis
