at highway speeds my engine stops responding and then all gauges and engine die (NO BUS)
I have a 01 quad cab 4.7 auto 60K miles with a after factory avsII alarm installed.
this all started after i washed my engine?
it sounds like my PCM is failing.
it has happened twice the first time it started right back up
the second time it took 20 min.
it runs fine and stalls with out warning
i was wondering if the alarm could cause this?
also where is the best place to buy a new PCM?

i have this same exact problem no bus appeared in the odometer screen i have a 2000 4.7 4x4
i took it to the dealer and they said it was a surge in the system that something was giving it a nasty shock
i also kept getting a huge shock whenever i got out of my truck so i installed a static strap to reduce the shock
now i get no shock at all and my truck hasn't died in about 3 months

i had a 1993 dakota that has over 300K on it and this happened to me around 290K turned out to be a blown cap in the computer there for that circuit could not hold any current and boom engine shuts off. washing engine computer gets wet in the wrong spot might cause it just a thought.

My 1999 4X4 Dak did this also with the NoBus code in the odometer box, I had to take it to the dealer twice but they finally figured out it was the PCM. When it would get hot, something in the PCM would fail and shut down the engine, mine only did it when it was above 100 degrees outside. The dealer said since the PCM was the problem and needed replaced that they had to replace it for free even though not under warranty because of Federal Emmissions laws. Since the PCM controls the engine emmissions the Feds make them replace free of charge. You may want to bring this up if it is the PCM unless you want an after market high performace computer anyway. I suppose anything going wrong in the PCM may cause this kind of failure but either way I think they would have to fix it.

well it happened six more times, spent the weekend at the dealer and they "could not duplicate" they will not replace the PCM unless they witness the fault. and has happened twice after that? the parts department said that it would take at least two weeks to get a PCM @ $460. I e-mailed Dodge and am waiting for a responce. does anyone know where i can get a PCM other than the dealer?

I got one for under $100 at car-parts.com to run while I was having the factory PCM flashed. Look for one with your drive train options (auto,is it 4x4?) and avoid one from a truck with a factory alarm - it won't like the different vin #. It could be water in an electrical connection - take apart, spray with WD-40, reassemble. It could well be the aftermarket alarm - I saw one malfunction, leaving vehicle stranded in the high speed lane, and had to push them to safety. Try the other stuff before replcing the PCM.

You might want to check your ground wires. From block to frame etc; Also some year models of Dakotas have important grouns behind the kick panel on both sides that will sometimes work loose. Many electrical problems are caused by bad ground wires.

just to let you know after numerous shutdowns one that lasted 4 hours after going through a puddle, i had the alternator rebuilt and it has been running fine, with out a failure

well so much for running fine, it died for good in the carwash. I had it towed to the dealer and they say that the PCM is bad and they won't have one until monday the good news is that it is covered under the 8 years/80,000 miles warranty because of Federal Emmissions laws

After experiencing similar problems I had the coil replaced and haven't had a problem since.

My 92 v8 was dying with me at all sorts of times and all sorts of conditions. The check engine light never came on. Turned out to be the crankshaft position sensor.
