I searched for a Dakota with the options I wanted. I came out with a v6 SXT without the v8 I wanted. Problem was all the dealers had v8's loaded with options I didn't want. Four local dealers had virtually nothing but Dakotas with the 3.9 in various trim levels. Not a single Dakota optioned similar to the SXT package only with the v8. I was so desperate that I would have taken one with either v8. Absolutely the worst vehicle shopping experience I've ever experienced. All the dealers wanted a premium price for a special order Dakota. One told me that the special order would not qualify for the $3,000 rebate offered on the current inventory.
Has anyone had a good experience buying the truck they wanted?

I did. Ordered my Dak cspecial order from Massey Yardley in Hobe Sound, Fl. '00 4.7L CC 5spd SLT 2wd 3.92's LSD. Everything on the lot wasn't what I wanted. They had no special deals going but I still got a good one.

I got my 01, QC, 4.7, 5spd, LSD, SLT, two tone paint, Infinity sound, trailer towing, tire and handling, etc. etc
with everything I wanted, yep they had to order it,
ALL FOR DEALER INVOICE, at Lawrence Marshall Dodge in Hempstead TX. (near Houston).
I fact, I built it on Edmunds.com, had all the invoice pricing, and gave the build sheet to them to order it. They didn't have to do anythingbut accept it and call me up to pick it up! Also came with factory cash back, ordered, and ONLY invoice price.
I know I'm not even the only one who has gotten their Dak like this. That sounds ludicrous to think they wouldn't do it for you this way.

Todd, if Daimler had a brain in their head they would offer the 4.7 as an option in the SXT package. I saw 10 of those SXT's on a single dealer's lot. Great package with a crappy v6 motor. That's right, the 3.7 Liberty engine doesn't belong in a truck. Drove one, hated it.

Special order not qualifying for the rebate?!? That's BS. And it actually costs them less in the long run when they special order - they don't have to pay interest on it while it sits on their lot unsold.

I got a 4.7 club cab dak 4x4 tow package with no ridiculous crap like power this that or the other thing for less than dealer cost. maybe i just got lucky that night but i got the truck i wanted for a good price w/rebate.

I ordered mine, to be built exactly as I wanted it. Ended up way cheaper than had I bought something on the lot. But I always get what I want, cause like Texas Todd said, I research and present them with a yes or no option. They don't play me.

I'm not trying to be mean but its insane you wanted a V8 and took a V6. They lied to you big time to get rid of those trucks on the lot. You should take someone with you next time you buy a car cause you dont seem to understand it very well. I would take that crappy truck back and demand a refund.

Quad, the SXT package is Dodge's "cheap, but sporty looking" package. To keep it cheap, they put the v6 in it.
Please tell me you went to more than one dealer. Using Dodge's website, I searched every Dodge dealer within 400 miles of Baton Rouge to find what I wanted. I found my truck in Birmingham, AL. Road trip!

Edit. I just re-read your post. You did go to more than one local dealer. Still should've looked farther away. If you couldn't find it after searching for hundreds of miles, then special order would be your only way to go.

My health isn't the best (lung cancer survivor) so I don't have the energy to play games with dealers. True, I'm not the most educated car buyer out there. Dodge trucks sell very well in my area. I spent a couple of months monitoring dealer lots to see how well they sell. Couldn't believe how many sold in that time period. I walked out of 3 local dealerships after not being able to negotiate a deal. Yes I did check out all the buyers websites and I even ordered a pricing guide from an internet source that gave me invoice price details for my area. The few 4.7 trucks on the lots were way out of line with the report. Dealers were selling them at a premium and wouldn't negotiate with me. I did get a reasonable deal on the SXT after failing with the other 3 dealerships. I basically gave up. Too tired to pursue anymore dealerships.

When i finally got around to order an 03, i was to late so the dealer did a new englend search ( Im from Mass) and found the color i wanted the engine the trans the opitions, the only two things that i did not get was the LSD and the 3.92 gear ratio. but other then that everything else was their, and i got the cool over head trip computer with compas and outside temp. so i was not gonna pass it up. I also got the 3,000 cahs back through dodge

TEXASTODD, i did the same thing at marshall, but i got 650 below invoice cost at Bluebonnet Motors in Navasota, where do u live at, and are you going to be at the Houston Mopar Show October 4th, and 5th?????

For giggles I looked at ordering a 04 at KBB.com. They didn't even offer the 4.7. Are we sure it is available for 04?
I haven't been past the parts counter at a dodge dealership in years.

Quad: Did you try www.dodge.com? If the dealer is Five Star (60% are), you can pull up inventory and window stickers just like you're standing on the lot. I sat down and searched the site for about 4 hours one night in 2001, and found my truck 100 miles away. Worth the trip; no dealer add-ons or documentary fees.

First time I took gas milage on my 03 Dakota 4x4 CC 4.7L, it came in at 14.1 mpg. After putting AMSOIL in it, I got 15.8.
