Message: Is it an LSD? My buddy's Dak w/LSD did the same thing when it was low on fluid. If it is LSD make sure to use gear oil that is for use with LSD. Some require that you use an additive with their lube for LSD rears, check the label. If it's an open rear then (like suggested before me) check the level.

Wal

Message: I was starting to have that same noise, whine. I just had the dealer replace the fluid when I had my steering worked on. They charged around 80 dollars, but the noise did go away. I have 28k on my 2001, they said it should be done at 10-15k? Thats not long at all!

Message: 10-15K ?? Only if you tow a lot or drive through creeks regularly. DIY next time, it's super easy, and use some synthetic gear lube. You'll be out about $20 and less then 1/2hr's time.
Heck, most manuals tell you the lube is fine for the life of the vehicle... not that I totally agree, but there's a WHOLE lotta difference between 10-15K and life of the veeeehickle :-) Pick a point in the middle and you won't waster oil/$.

Message: It's for sure the differental. Just the question is is if the oil needs to be changed. I have a 98 with LSD and it only makes the noise when I put it in reverse going to the right. Then once I go foward it makes the noise for a short time, but it's when the diff is realigning itself. It's possible there is something else wrong with mine....knock on wood, hopefully not..... but now that I have heard this I will check it out and change the oil and see what's up myself.

Message: Thats unbelievable Jonesy. My truck (3.92 LSD) is doing exactly what you described. But of course, when I took it to my mechanic, I couldn't get it to make the noise (worked like a charm). I would also like to know if it could be something else, I guess I should just go change the fluid and find out.
Could anyone tell me where is the best place to get good diff. fluid and how much do I need to do the job.
Thanks a lot guys.
