Subject: Metal In oil IP: Logged
Message: Did a oil change maybe 2 weeks ago, and noticed about 2 twin peices of metal...they both were very fragile and thin, about as long as a matchstick, and 1/4" wide, wondering what it could be.... i also burn about a quart of oil every 1500 miles, no smoke out the tailpipe or smell...help would be great...

Message: Those are shavings probably to a cyl. wall. Now the burning of oil is because you are passing a little oil by your Pistons or your valves, your going to have to do a compression test wet and dry. If you show gains in pressure when it done wet then it would be you walls and dry would be your heads. If it does it Wet it would be a great time to get a short block or a bottom end rebuilt or if it does it doesn't show a differance dry or wet then it would be time to get heads rebuilt. Just take it easy on it till it gets to the point that it is very noticable. These are early signs of engine problems you where luck to find those shavings. It also would be a great time to trade it in on a new one.

Message: well those shavings were kinda thick, like 1/16 - 1/32 of an inch.... i would think that would be alot to have shaved off a cyl wall, and there were 2 peices about the same size... at first i thought maybe a gasket???... and second would i be able to do any of those tests myself

Message: They could also be shavings from a rod or main bearing. Is your engine making any knocking noises?

Message: Sounds like pieces of piston ring if you're burning that much oil.

Message: Could be one of a dozen things. Over the years I have found metal shavings like you describe inside new oil filters, I too currently use the Pure One filters and have never found metal in those, so I doubt that is the source. It could have been left over from the machining process when the block was made. I would keep watching your oil when you change it, and see what happens. I have seen some strange things in oil pans over the years. (half of a rod bearing, rod bolt nut, even found a penny, same year as the engine ?)

Message: So u think it could be just something that was left over...i mean they were good sized pieces to be shavings from the cylinder wall...and they were rusty and fragile....well anyways im still gonna do a oil change next weekend when i am back home and see what happens...kills me 1000 miles on Mobil 1....but better to spend 30 on oil and see whats wrong with the truck instead of alot more on a engine

Message: You might consider an oil analysis program to help see where this is going. Might save you a blown motor. Compared to costs and hassle of analysis it might be worth it.

Message: The oil analysis is a good idea. One other post mentioned shavings from a bearing, the material that bearings are made from would not come apart in the manor that you describe. The rust on the pieces sugests that they are old.

Message: Do you have any heavy equipment dealers in your area. ? You could search on www.google.com and I am sure you would find a site that has test kits and does the testing. Maybe the Amsoil guy could help. I am the equipment manager for a construction company and I go through the local Cat dealer. Test kits should range in the $ 15-25 range.

Message: I just paid Amsoil $140.00 for six postage pre-paid test kits and a pump for drawing sample through dipstick. After you get your first test back in the mail you can register on-line to view your results faster.
This is a great site if you are interested in oil analysis. All kinds of oil and motor combo`s with lab results. http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php
K&N air filters not welcome at above site. Too much silicon (read sand) resulting in more wear metals in sample.

Message: The analysis would tell you the condition of your oil, the types of metals that may be present, along with antifreezes etc. There are several types of metals inside an engine (aluminium, bronze, steel, cast iron, plus the different layers of the bearings). The test can detect the presence of these metals, and the amount present. This can be used to determine the condition of the engine. A couple of examples could high levels of aluminium could be piston skirt wear, or as rod and main bearings wear the different metals that make up the bearing would show up in testing.
With the mileage of your engine it would seem unlikely that a condition would develope to cause wear of the type to produce the pieces that you found, something like that would be more common on the initial start up, from an assembly error. ( improper clearance somewhere )
The testing could ease any fears of a major problem.
