I have 97 Dakota 318 Auto 4x4 with overdrive. Question? When I press the button in on the end of the shift lever the overdrive light illuminates in the instrument cluster. Here is the problem. The transmission shifts down and not up into overdrive. When the light is on doesn't this mean that the truck is in overdrive? When the light is off doesn't this mean I am not in overdrive? Seems like its backwards to me. Please help.

I think the light says "O/D off" meaning when it is lit, you are not in overdrive.

the truck in fine, your backwards. Overdrive is on until you turn it off. Doesn't make much sense to have to shift your automatic truck anytime you want to go over 55.
