| RE: HYPERTECH PROGRAMMER??? IP: Logged
Message: Matt,
I received my Hypertech programmer just before leaving for a vacation (last Friday to yesterday) from Portland, Or. area to Port Townsend, Wa. with my 3600# travel trailer.
I own a '00 QuadCab with a 5.9 4x4, factory tow package, AirAid cold air induction system, 3" cat-back, FastMan throttle body, Autolites, 180* 'stat and the balance being stock. There is just over 26,000 miles on the truck.
On a run to Grants Pass, Oregon over the 4th of July holiday with the same set-up, minus Hyperteck, I averaged 10 mpg with about 750 miles total driving. Towing/non-towing about equal. I used regular gas and all the tricks to boost mileage. Towing up some of the long grades was a bit challenging. I was considering a Dynamax, but the $47,000 price tag ended that dream!!
This run was just over 950 miles with about an even mix of towing/non-towing, just the same as my 4th of July trip. I averaged 12 mpg with no significant hill related agrivations. Yes, I had to go in and out of O/D when I got to some of the longer/steeper inclines on the freeway, but most of the flat was 60 mph in O/D.
I used the 'towing performance' program, per discussion with the Hypertech folks and premium fuel, whatever brand gas was the least expensive.
It will take a long time to pay for the programmer with gas-mileage-improvement-savings, but I think the device was worth the cost if for no other reason than the truck working somewhat easier, and with no detonation, than before. I also noticed that under significant load there was no dramatic temp rise I encountered in my earlier trip.
I paid $285 inc. shipping through a group buy I was refered to. Prices under 'normal' conditions seem to run in the low to mid 300's.
Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to get all the info I could think of to you.
