Message: I HAVE RECENTLY COMPLETED A SWAP TO A 5SPEED IN MY 98 DAKOTA 5.2 LTR TRUCK, THE SWAP WORKS GREAT BUT I NOW HAVE A PROBLEM I NEVER HAD BEFORE WITH A POPING SOMTIMES ALMOST SEEMS LIKE A BACK FIRE THROUGH THE EXHAUST WHEN YOU GET THE RPMS UP TO MAYBE 3000 THEN LET OFF. I LOVE A LITTLE RUMBLE BUT THIS SEEMS EXCESSIVE. I HAVE MOPAR PERF HEADERS 3 INCH CAT AND 3 INCH EXHAUST. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS.DOES MY EXHAUST HAVE TOO LITTLE BACK PRESSURE TO CAUSE THIS?

Message: Yeap... backfire.
I would look where the exhaust bolts together letting air leak into the exhaust and getting in-pipe detonations. Start at the manifolds (new gaskets?) and find any connections that are bolted and not welded that may have a "donut" gasket or slip joint that would leak.
My motorcycle is needing a new exhaust gasket and does the same. Being a H.O. 500cc single the vibration of the rubber mounted pipe eventually requires the replacement of the exhaust "donut". So I do so on a regular maintenance schedule.

Message: THANKS DAVE, THIS IS WHAT SOMEONE ELSE TOLD ME. I DID HAVE TO REMOVE THE PASS SIDE HEADER TO INSTALL TRANNIE SO THIS MAKES SENSE AS I REUSED THE SAME GASKETS. I KNOW ONE OF THE CONECTIONS IN THE CROSS OVER PIPE WAS RIPPED.

Message: I had this problem too with a 98 dak 5.2 5 speed. End result was chrysler wasn't going to fix it and all the service guys (went to 3 in area) said "they all do that".
There was one guy a while back that won the lemon law because of it.

Message: Err...
Wait, does it only do it when you let up on the gas, like when your decelerating?
Normal for a stick shift to making popping noises through the exhaust when using the engine as a brake and downshifting. My V6 does it all the time! In fact, every stick I've ever owned has 'popped' when downshifting or decelerating in gear...
Heck, even my fathers '67 GTO does it! Of course, it's a lot louder when doing it. :o)
