Subject: getting ready to install cams IP: Logged
Message: Was wondering if anyone could tell me what all is needed? Any lubricants, sealers, threadlock, etc. Do you use threadlock on the bolts? Do you lube the journals of the cams like you would on a 360, for example? Is anything other than the cams and tools needed? Thanks to all that help. 2003 4.7 5-speed

Message: Straight forward process. no sealers needed. Cams are lubed - I just used Mobile One I was running in the engine. the hardest part is getting the valve cover off on the passenger side. make sure you mark the cam chain while it is on the sprocket to the sprocket mark. make sure the chain is secured with the tool or the one you built. I blocked both sides with plywood edges to guarantee (if there is such a thing) no chain slippage. Retorquing the driver cam is hard cause of stuff in the way. You may want to convert inch pounds to ft pounds before you start unless you have a inch/lb torque wrench handy - I didn't. I'm not a regular mechanic so it took about 5 hours with smoke and beer breaks. If done right the truck will fire right up with no codes showing. Some people say to kill the ECM by disconnecting the battery so it will "learn" cams quicker........

Message: Thanks man. I was hoping someone would give me a good answer, instead of telling me to search (already tried that), etc. Thanks again.

Message: I just took a nylon cable tie and put it through the cam gear around the chain and tightened it up. No way the chain could move a tooth then.
I also made my own wedges out of wood.
Overall, a pretty straight forward install. Agree hardest part is getting the valve cover off.

Message: You need to download the instructions. I think I got mine from buymopar.com You can find inch lb to ft lb conversion on the web. Agree with Maynard that you can make your own wood wedges (cover with duct tape to keep wood particles from breaking off and falling in the engine) and save some bucks. Any more questions - just ask.

Message: I am getting ready to tear in to it this morning. Where do you put the wood wedge specifically? Is the a slot or something it fits in? Also, which side is the longest cam? I understand one side is longer than the other.

Message: You're also gonna need a spanner wrench to hold the cam gear while loosening and tightening the cam gear bolts. I did mine on my Jeep and as stated above the passenger side is 90% of the job. I downloaded instructions from speedtweaks site when it was available. It took me a full 7 hours on the Jeep.

Message: I did this install on a 2003 Ram. Not very hard at all. I am a mechanic, but I think anyone with mechanical knowledge could do it. Just remove the air baffle and various hoses and wires out of the way to remove valve covers. I took right side completely off and just rotated left side under the brake booster and left it there until cams were swapped. It was too hard to remove. Power steering resovoir was in the way in the front and brake booster in the rear. Be careful to not damage valve cover seals and you will need to replace nothing but the cams. I just used wire ties to hold the chain/ gears and tightened them against other external engine braces, etc. They did not slip at all. I made the wood wedge tool but didn't even use it. This took me about 5 hours with no help and really taking my time. Stopped for lunch and took a break after one side. Non-stop would take about 4-4.5 hours. Hope this helps.

Message: On the dak, some good tips have been posted way before this thread.
Loosening the A/C evap. (large silver cylinder) on the pass. side helps with clearance.
Good luck
