Subject: Does the serpentine belt affect A/C?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1997 DD V-8 and recently the A/C quit on me. The fan blows but only warm air. Then I found out my serpentine belt is cracked and has been making noises. Does the serpentine belt have anything to do with the A/C compound? And could someone tell me the easiest way to change my belt and what tools I will need? Much Appreciated.

I had this problem recently in my 98. The serpentine belt wasn't making the noise it was that a/c clutch with the a/c engaged. I replaced the clutch with no problem for about $200.

What do you mean by AC compound.? On a serpentine belt minor cracks are ok, it is the ones that have made thier way through the reinforced layers that should concern you. You could have a idler pully bearing going bad, maybe the A/C clutch, or altenator bearings. The noise could be coming from several possible sources. Have someone turn your air on and off while you watch the A/C clutch to see if it is engaging.

to change the serpantine belt, all you need is a socket wrench. There is a tensioner pully that you can pull back with the wrench. This makes it pretty easy and it's only like a 10 minute job. Just remember how you took the old belt off :) I also have a 97 dakota and the A/C went out. I brought it to a shop and they found the evaporator coil was leaking. The heater core was also leaking. It might be worth going to an A/C repair shop for them to do a leak test to figure out what the problem is... should only cost about $75 for the test, but could be LOTS more if it's a big problem to fix
