I need to pick up a bucket truck 250 miles away, I want to drive the dakota down and tow the dakota back with a tow dolly. Can't I just put the transfer case in nuetral? or do i need to take the rear drive shaft off. I can't see towing the dakota that far with no atf lubricating the transmission. The dakota is a 96 with the 318 and automatic 4wd. Thanks

I was told NOT to tow my dak without first un-hooking the drive shaft. Even though you have the trans in nuetral, the trans will still be turning the converter and without it getting any fluid it will burn up. Thats what i was told. It could be wrong but i felt alot better doing it. I would if i was you, call a trans shop and just ask them. I would rather waste a phone call instead of a trans.....

Towing the truck 250 miles wont hurt it. If I was going to tow it 2500 miles then yes take that driveshaft off but you will be fine at 250 miles. If you want to take the driveshaft out do so. It dosent take long and only 4 bolts to remove. Be careful with the Cross caps or the needle bearings will fall out and you will have to replace the cross.
