Message: A quart a week is about right for a plenum gasket. You wont notice much smoke either but its going out that way, same thing happened to me. 1999 4X4 ext.cab Sport 5.2L auto.

Message: There is a hose on each valve cover... one goes to air intake, the other goes to manifold.
Disconnect both hoses and start the engine.
Plug both hoses with your fingers and feel for a vacuum in the crankcase.
If there is a vacuum, the manifold pan leaks. If slight pressure, manifold is OK.
If manifold is OK, look for excessive smoke and flow coming from hoses; it may be blowby and a set of rings is in order.

Message: Sounds like plenum gasket for sure. Yes it can cause slugishness and spark knock as well. Mine was blown in three separate places and losing a quart every 4-500 miles. One other sure way to tell is to take the air hat off your throttle body and open the butterflys by hand and with a flashlite look down into the intake. It should be dry. If it is wet with oil then your gasket is blown and needs replaced. Try hughes engines website they offer a good repair kit. hughesengines.com
