Subject: V8 Mods 97 5.2L IP: Logged
Message: Hello,
I have a 97 4x4 Auto with a 5.2 V8. It has 47,000 miles on it and recently diagnosed as having a blown intake manifold gasket - resulting in a lot of engine pinging and oil consumption. I have been reading a lot about this and it seems to be a common problem with the DAKs. Since I need to replace the gasket anyway and I do not want this to occur again in the future, I've decided to replace the beerbarrel with the M1 2bbl. I've added the K&N Gen II FIPK, and I'm going to replace the stock TB with the Flowmetrics CNC Billet 50mm TB and add the MSD 6a, Taylor 8mm wires, Autolite 3923, Accel brass cap and rotor. I have ordered these parts from KRC Performance. My question is does anyone have a similar set-up and experienced any problems with this combination of items? Anything that I should be aware of with incompatibility or issues would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Jeff

Message: Sounds like an awesome setup, I wouldn't expect any problems. What type of exhaust setup are you running? You'll get any even bigger bump with that combo if you run some headers and a good exhaust system.

Message: Thanks Bill. Right now I'm still stock, I'm just starting on the mods and I'm new to this so I'm trying to do things a little at a time as I learn. I plan on getting headers and exhaust. What I want to do is get the added power of headers and exhaust but I'm not really into the loudness so I'm trying to look and see what would be best for me to keep it as quiet as possible but still enjoy the benefits of upgraded headers & exhaust. That may be asking too much though - don't know if that's possible but I would like to try. I would really enjoy having a "sleeper". I'm having a great time with it right now and these mods are a blast! To me there's nothing like looking under the hood and seeing all of the cool things that can and will be added. Do you have any recommendations on the headers/exhaust? Oh yeah I forgot to ask, should I upgrade to the MSD blaster coil since I'm going to use the MSD6a ignition or will the stock coil work ok? Again, I'm new here.
Thanks

Message: Get the MSD coil as well for that setup.
I'd get the PPH headers(identical to Mopar headers but cheaper). They include a new y-pipe as well, which is nice. As for exhaust, I'd go with Gibson for a "sleeper". Nice sound at idle, a little growl when you get on it. You'll be happy.

Message: I'm concerned about sound or vibrations at cruising speeds with a non-stock exhaust system; between 60 - 70 will the Gibson be quiet especially on long trips? I want to make sure that it's enjoyable to cruise and that the cabin doesn't sound bad. It's hard to pick out an exhaust system because you really never know how it sounds until it's installed. Thanks for the coil advice and that's what I thought so I'll have to order that today.

Message: Here's the Gibson setups, quietest to loudest:
Single side exit
Dual side exit
Split Rear
None of them really resonate too badly in the cab.

Message: I just put a 3" cat back system on my 1999 Dakota 4X4 with a 18" xlerator performance muffler, its the same muffler design as magnaflow. It is nice and quiet in the cab but you can hear a little rumble when you get on it, the performace is good, but cant tell for sure yet just how good, cause I dont have the K&N FIPK yet. 3" single pipe comes out behind right rear tire.

Message: I've done some research on the PPH headers as well as Gibson and they both seem to be highly recommended so it seems like I can't go wrong either way. The single side exit is probably the way to go for me. Is there a good website to listen to different exhaust systems? I looked at the Gibson site but didn't find anything easily - it could be there I just don't know where to look.

Message: Tony - from what I have read the TB spacer is a waste of money. I don't have any direct experience with it though but that is what I understand. Everyone has said that an upgraded TB is good as long as you get the proper one for your truck. People are recommeding the Fastman or F&B brands. I just ordered mine from KRC Performace and it's the Flowmetrics CNC Billet 50mm. They recommend that one for lighter mods like the one's that I am doing and they seem to have a good reputation so I'm going with it. I recently installed the K&N Gen II FIPK intake and noticed the difference right away. I don't know how many HP gains I got but it seems to run a lot smoother and it does sound good and well worth the money. It's also nice because you can clean and re-use the filters. The K&N will run you around ~$270 or less depending on where you get it. There are also a lot of people making their own air intake systems using parts from the local hardware store for very little cost. That is the first mod that I would recommend. For my exhaust I want the single side out instead of the duals because I have a tow package and I want the exhaust fumes diverted away from things that I might tow. This link might help:

Message: Definetly the cold air intake first. I would do that before anything else but both that and the throttle body will work nicely and can be done at the same time. Also a 180 thermostat is cheap <$10 (Robert Shaw) and should help. Do all of the cheap things first and see how you like it before you get into the heavy stuff. At least that is my plan. Follow that plan on the link because most of that stuff is very common to most of the people on this board and you can always get some good advice as you go. Autolite plugs 3923 are another easy one. I have found that there are a lot of people on this forum that know an awful lot about these DAKs!

Message: I have order a airraid intake and have been looking over alot of boards on this site and it seems that alot of people fiddle with their IAT
(relocate it or make an ajuster) is this a good idea or should i live it alone?
Also i have considered lowering the back of my truck 1 3/4" to 2" will this lower the performance in any way, i have 30 x 9.5 tires so i dont want to drop the front, i was cosidering using 2" lowering blocks from pep boys and may be shave it down a little so i don't end up with the front higher then the back
i like the idea of a TB but i dont know about always driving around on high octine, unless you dont need to im not sure i would get one unless i could use mid grade gas all the time
thanks for all the info jeff
Tony
any responce would help

Message: Tony
The TB spacer is pointless trust me i bought
one and didnt do anything. But if ur lookin
for add ons to get more power then start with
the cold air intake. I noticed a big
difference, also consider getting exhaust
headers and runnin 2 3/4-3in exhaust. And id
recommend a 52mm bore throttle body. Its not
that hard to turn a stock throttle body to a
performance one. Also go with different plugs
wires(8mm or bigger), cap, rotor, and coil.
Also if ur gonna crack open the engine
consider porting out the intake manifold and
possible changing the cams. Also makes a big
difference. Get an underdrive pulley kit, and
if u want a stage 2 jet performance chip, or
spend the extra money and get a tuner. Im not
sure what everyone recommends for plugs and
everything but autolite 5224 is whats
recommended not sure y they recommend 3923.
also i was thinking of trying the irridium
plugs if anyone has any feedback on them.

I like finding more advice on them. Mine is a 97
with a 318 and I sure would like to give it more
power. One reason I never have is because I don't
want to do something that will cause me trouble
getting it inspected.
