I had that as well. It was in the range of about 3800 - 4500 rpms. I fixed the belly pan gasket and the problem stopped. Racheting sound is a good way to describe it. I never thought of it that way. :-)

Do you also notice black unburned fuel coming out the tailpipe when you hear the noise? You might bave to be on the highway at night and look in yoru rearview to see it in the headlighs of the poor driver behind you.

Had that happen to me before Mark. A nice tune-up fixed everything right up. No more ping, no more smoke. These Magnums love spark plugs.

Yes the gas price is ridiculous but use mid grade fuel or better especually if you have ANY modifications like intake or exhaust. The higher rate of air is going to make your truck want a better spark rate in the fuel also the exhaust lets it flow on out so therefore more air to suck on in sthe there for better gas ignition needed......see a pattern here. BELIEVE ME I HAVE HAD PLENTY OF PROBLEMS WITH THIS NOISE IT IS DETONATION OR PINGING AND THE ONLY WAY TO FIX IT IS TO INCREASE THE FUEL BURNING EFFICIENCY.
MY greatest modification is the 4.10 rearend. this make the engine do less work and the gears do all the work.

If you have metal in your drained oil its not from the belly pan gasket (the ones that go bad are cardboard), it is from something much, much worse. You definately have a major problem, maybe spun bearing? Others with more mechanical education may be able to help more.

well it was thin metal, and really fragile, so is there any metal gaskets, i mean it wasn't alot maybe like 2 pieces the size of matchsticks, but maybe a 1/4" wide
