Subject: Fan Clutch Wind.... IP: Logged
Message: Besides a fan clutch from the dealer is there a good one on the market that will work?? I just changed mine on my 96dak 5.2 auto and have went thru 3 aftermarket ones so far. I know i should just throw it away but if they work right i would prefer to have it on. So far all 3 aftermarket ones stay on all the time. They are even made by hayden.

Message: How do you know it does not shut off? It is only supposed to turn freely when running at higher RPMs. When at idle it should always be on.

Message: Like EBL said, they should spin all the time, they will only engage or lock up when the engine is at operating temperture. I got a really nice sever duty fan clutch from carquest, it really throws a lot of air, it is smaller and more compact then the stocker, and it solved my overheating issue completly.

Message: I can hear the fan running all the time, no matter what speed i am doing. The original fan clutch went on first thing in the morning for a few minutes then would shut off. The only times i would hear it again would be if it was hot outside and i had the a.c. on. Then it would wind up for awile till the temp went back down to normal.

Message: I never have had a overheating problem at all till a few weeks ago when my thermostat was stuck on stupid. Replaced it with a 180 instead of the stock 195. I know the fan turns all the time but it is locked up now all the time...

Message: Just more information.
The thermal viscous fan drive is a silicone-fluid-filled coupling used to connect the fan blades to the water pump shaft. The coupling
allows the fan to be driven in a normal manner. This is done at low engine speeds while limiting the top speed of the fan to a predetermined maximum level at higher engine speeds.
A thermostatic bimetallic spring coil is located on the front face of the viscous fan drive unit. This spring coil reacts to the temperature of the radiator discharge air. It engages the viscous fan drive for higher fan speed if the air temperature from the radiator rises above a certain point. Until additional engine cooling is necessary, the fan will remain at a reduced rpm regardless of engine speed.
If the fan assembly free-wheels without drag (the
fan blades will revolve more than five turns when
spun by hand), replace the fan drive. This spin test must be performed when the engine is cool.

Message: carquest part number 77270 in big letters then htr 2790. The guy said it was a severe duty clutch and it cost 130 dollars, hope this helps. I have had no issue with it yet, I have been to the drag races three times with it, idiling in the staging lanes in the heat and it has yet to over heat like it used to.

Message: I will find one that works right sooner or later, the dealer will not see a penney from me. I would rather put up with the wind noise from it and more gas consumption before going to a dealer. I just cant figure out why it is SO much money at the dealer verses the independent auto parts houses?? (maybe because they work)?? Maybe a salvage yard would be a place to look?? Kinda hard to get the nut off but at least at a junk yard you can beat them off without having anything in the way...

Message: Pull it off attached to the water pump. I've never been able to get them off any other way.
In fact, after the water pump/clutch/fan is off the truck, the only way I've been able to separate them is to push a screw through a hole in the pulley and attach a set of vice grips to the end of the screw. When the vice grips catch a nipple or obstruction on the water pump the pulley stops turning. The screw attaching the clutch to the water pump can then be backed off.
If anybody can tell me an easier way I'm all for it. But this is the only way I could stop the pulley from turning.

Message: i just bought a Hayden Clutch for my 94 dakota and a serpentine belt and it was like 90$ and 15 minutes worth of labor...the clutch seems to come on at start from a cool down time and every once in a while...i say 75% of the time its not on or less...but hayden is good...and since my previous clutch wasnt working properly this one sounds like a damn jet engine. Pretty Nice sound
