Subject: please help-why pinging IP: Logged
Message: last nite i put in autolites into my 97 5.2 dakota 5spd RC 2wd with 70k miles. i also put in 8mm JBA wires. now the engine pings like crazy and i think its not burning all the fuel and i think the extra fuel has clogged my cat. i also have a flowmaster muffler that is dumped before the axle. so are the plugs bad? i always used champion plugs with no problem.
any help thanks

Message: You probably have already checked but if not double check your wires, make sure they are on completely and on the right spark plug. Check also for any vacumm hoses that might have come off while you did the job. If you didnt move your distributor then it has to be the plug wires. I dont think it is the plugs.

Message: i took out the chilton manual and took all the plugs off and put them on so they were on right according to the manual. i believe on the cap there is a 1, then clockwise is 8, and so on, but it doesnt go 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8, its kinda not in numerical order according to the manual. i checked the vacuum lines and all are fine. still pings like crazy and under acc. it almost backfires constantly. any help thanks!

Message: so i get under my car tonite, in the dark and i see that my cat is red hot and glowing! i have heard about this bout its sureal. anyways i do have 70k on the stock cat and some daks here are already on their 3rd cats. i read that a too rich air/fuel mixture can plug the cat, i think this happened when i messed up the plug wires and my engine misfired for a lil bit. fuel must have gotten to the cat un burned. so anyways should i straight pipe it or get a perf cat? theres no emissions checks here in MI but cops do care here about noise. also, i was going to put in my old spark plugs to fix the pinging but i guess its the cat.

Message: Strange problem. Doesn't sound like a prob with the cat tho. It sounds to me like the firing order is off. You might take another look at your manual. I'd suggest fixing it before you get another cat and burn it up too.

Message: If i could here in calif take my cat off it would be gone. With the right mufflers depending how you want it to sound on your truck were put on you probably would'nt notice any difference without your cat. If when you put your old plugs back in and the pinging does stop then i would look to see if they sold you the right spark plugs with the right heat range.
For some reason i cant beleive that a bad cat will make your engine ping.? If it didnt ping before you changed the plugs and wires i dont think it should do it after unless you did something wrong. If you can check the timing.

Message: Probably time to triple check those wires, especially if you expected them to be in numerical order. Sounds like you might be skipping rather than pinging, with some plugs not firing in proper sequence. Good luck.

Message: thanks alot guys, i took out the chitlon manual and did the firing order according to them, but next to the instructions it said these arent always the correct order for 5.2s So i dont know if the author of the book is just guessing lol. as for the misfire, i had one plug go bad a year ago and i know how it sounds when theres one misfire and it doesnt sound like that at all, it seems that the entire engine is pinging or something, il put in the old plugs tonite and see how it goes, but i think i had a too rich cond. few days ago so its kinda too late for my cat lol. thanks

Message: It has to be your firing order and you seem a litle confused...The #1 on the cap is only a starting point. The connectors on the cap are not in order clockwise or counter clockwise. Thats where the firing order comes in.I dont know what it is off the top of my head but you also need to know what direction the rotor turns. So if for example the firing order is 13524etc you hook #1 connection on the distbutor to the number 1 cylinder. If the rotor turns clockwise then the second distrbutor connection clockwise connects to the #3 cylinder The third distributor connector clockwise connects to the #5 cylinder and so on. If you have doubts about the firing order, distributor rotation etc. Call your local auto parts store and theyshould be able to look it up for you. I for example use Autozone. Hope this helps

Message: I know this isn't much help now but if your like me and not real good at figuring out firing orders it is always a good idea to remove only one plug wire at a time and replace it with new one before removing next one. Almost impossible to screw up that way. But if your truck was running ok before you changed plugs and wires you definitly have got your wires crossed somewhere.

Message: yes, i should have done it one at a time but somehow i had a few friends over and things got speedy and messed up such a easy task, wish i never had done it. im an almost certain the firing order is now correct since i got the chilton manual out, and it is somewhat like the last post said. i will put in the old champion plugs and see how it goes. thanks

Message: Bet you don't do it again. Glad you got it straightened out man. I just put new Autolite 3923's in mine today and couldn't believe the difference they made. Truck even sounds smoother and seems to have better throttle response.

Message: yea, the idle is great. it idles nicely at 400rpm, havent seen that in 2 yrs lol. i also have a KN FIPK and a m1, still have to install a large turtle that is in the glovebox. also i think a new TB is next, but is a ported stock v8 good for my 5.2 or iis a brand new billet piece worth it? thanks

Message: I don't have any personal experience with either but have thought about doing same thing myself. From what I have read on most Dakota sites most eveyone that has gotten the Fastman TB at less than half the price of a billet are quite satisfied with the performance. I think I'll put that Mod on hold though untill these damn gas prices go back down some.
