Subject: Truck Won't Start Need Help Now
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a '98 Dakota with a 318 V8. I came home last night left the interior lights on. Tried to start it this morning and it seemed like the battery was dead. I jumped it and only after stepping on the gas would it stay running but immediatly after letting off the gas it would stop running. I put a home brew cold air kit on it and I'm wondering if that has something to do with it?
Please Help

Did you take it out and drive it after jump starting it?? If so, I woudl say take the battery in to get checked. If it's the stock battery, they are notorious for just dying with no warning. Left many a people stranded. It happened to me. Get a good replacement and have no more problems.

Had same problem leaving truck for almost a week X-mas time - compass style radar detector ran it down - put a good charge on it, but it would die at idle. Didn't know about resetting computer, just drove it a bit and it straightened out. Anyone know an easy way to make aux. power work with ignition switch ? Salesman said there's a way to do this on minivans but not Dak.

The Dodge Dealer said that I wore the battery out by leaving the lights on then the cold weather froze the battery up and cracked it up. New battery and all should be well.

Linda, you've probably got some water in your fuel which is very noticable in the colder wheather... Try flooring it out and see if it won't start then... You may have to keep it reved a little after it starts to keep it running... If it still doesn't start, can you hear a noise like your fuel pump running when you turn your ignition on??? May be your fuel pump agoin or just plain froze up :// Hope this will help some...

I have a 92 Dakota, all stock. The timing jumped at 161,101 miles. So I had it towed home and did all the work needed including {02 sensor, crankshaft sensor, plugs, wires, cap, rotor button,coil,s.b.e.c.c. level 2-comp.,stator,distributor, and exhaust. For some reason I only get intermitten fire.

Phill, I hate to tell you this but, with 161K miles and your timing jumped, you've probably got a severly worn or broken timing sprocket. You should change it out with a double roller set. You're going to need to remove the whole front end of the engine then line up the crank and camshaft marks. Good luck!
BTW, the stock nylon toothed sprockets are notorious for doing this at high mileage.

1. Charge battery
2. remove Negative terminal
3. turn the key like you're trying to start it. This resets the capacitors.
4. re-install neg. battery cable.
5. Try and start it. remember, It may run rough for a short time while it relearns the bascis.

Good luck.

Danny I take it you must have a 4.7, apparently its on the right rear side of the engine right above the starter. It looks like there is just one mounting bolt.
