What would you suggest for a replacement muffler on a 1999 dakota 4x4 sport 5.2L. I'm not looking for loud just better flow through, I don't want to hear a constant droning sound on the highway. I will leave the rest of the exhaust stock. I want something that sounds good when your on the throttle but not so much at highway speeds, and still has good flow through. The only mods to my truck are a superchip reprogram and after the muffler a K&N FIPK.

why dont you just replace it with stock parts?... how is anyone else supposed to tell you what you should get based on your criteria, like everyone in the world has the same tastes you do...

Because Pete, I don't want stock, I want better air flow without being obnoxiously loud. I thought I made that clear in my post but I guess not. I have no experience with dakotas or their exhaust sytems, but for those of you that do, please let me know what you would suggest. Thanks.

I put on a Magnaflow 15 X 8 oval SS 2.5in/2.5out on my 5.2L. Nice mellow sound. Gained some response. No low end loss at all. $130 installed. The magnaflow is a straight flow-thru type, no baffles or chambers for resonance.

sorry jd, but... everyones gonna have a different opinion and taste of sound. one persons gonna tell you.. "RUN OPEN CUTOUTS" and another one isa gonna tell you "run magnaflow".. but no one here is YOU, therefore its pointless asking opinions on exhaust feel and sound. because not everyone has your tastes. what is pete gonna tell you to run? pete is gonna tell you to run spintech, because that is HIS preferance.

Pete, does Spintech resonate inside the cab? Is it loud or does it perform without all the noise? This is the info I'm looking for, I don't have an opinion or even a reference point. I need some input so I don't buy a muffler that gives me a headache while driving down the highway.

Pete who named you jerk of the board? well you are doing a great job so keep it up....and maybe one day you too will own a real truck and you can trade in that hot wheels toy. Spintech makes a great muffler.....i have been installing exhausts for the past 10 years and have had em all...mine dumps before the rear axle so it is very loud..but a NICE really loud...if ya like setting off the neighbors car alarms each night:)....with the right full piped exhaust its a lil noisy when you give it the gas but at crusing speed it shouldnt be all that bad...you can listen to a few sound bits at the spintech site....go to your local track one night and see what others are running..this way you can also get a good listen at trucks under full throttle.......either way enjoy your ride

Thanks for the info MauiRT, but I'm in freakin' Nebraska and there is no "local Track" wish there was just for something to watch on the weekends. Oh well, I'm getting some good ideas of what to put on my truck that will serve my purposes, I did more internet research that turned up some good info.

who named you the mr know-it-all exhaust installing master of the universe?

Hah, what did you do, check out my IP address and cross referance that with my social security number, and run it though a search for all of the auto insurance providers on the earth, and then find out that I actually drive a hot-wheels?? I love it when someone tells another person "i bet you dont even own a truck" Well, I can stoop that low too... "My dad can beat up your dad!" SO: (sticks tounge out)~!!!!

jdllizard:
My exhaust is a 3" catless, spintech catback. Runs over the frame, comes out in front of the pass side tire. I personally think it sounds awesome. It's got a nice hum on the highway, and if you stomp on it, it almost changes sounds, not just the same sound at idle but louder. kinda like if you listen to a dual cammed honda when the cams change at ~5500rpm, or when the ricers say "I hit vtec!" I just used that as an example... spintech sounds in no way like a honda. anyways.... I had a flowmaster 40 series, ran out the back behind each tire and it was the typical flowmaster sound you hear everywhere. big drone, kind of a boring sound. Then I hacked off the tailpipes and dumped it before the axel. Sound changed a little bit, obviously because there was no more tailpipes, but still kinda boring, and droned in the cab more because the sound now bounced off the pavement and back up into the truck. The only thing I dont like about the spintech setup I have is that im a symetrical person.. i dont like things looking different on either side of my truck as opposed to the other side. I'd offer install pics to you, but my trucks in the shop and my camera and laptop are inside. I'm driving to NC this week to my permanent duty station, so I'm a busy beaver lately.. but theres tons of pics on the net of whatever exhaust you want. There used to be a site, I think it was blackdakrt.com that had literally tons of mpegs of different set-ups to help people that couldnt decide on an exhaust. its been years since ive been to that site, and i dont know if anyone else has put up all those videos somewhere else. My personal advice is: go spintech. But like Ive said numerous times before... no ones gonna be able to tell you what youre gonna be happy with. i would suggest to you to pay attention to people on the street, when you hear an exhaust you like.. ask them what they run. keep in mind if its on a different kinda car/truck.. its going to sound a little different on yours, but it will give you a base to start forming your own opinions.

Oh yeah: MauiRT, heres an old pic of my hotwheels, wheres yours? i bet you gotta matchbox dont ya. and my daddy can still beat up your daddy.

All of this intellectually challenging conversation aside, Magnaflows really are a great muffler on a V8...they sound really crappy on a V6. I know...I had one. Someone made reference to a 15x8 stainless oval in a previous post, this is what I had on my V6, and sold to a guy with a 4.7. He was ecstatic, but like Pete said, maybe it was just him...

Anyway, check out the Magnaflow #14256. I bought mine from Husker High Performance Exhaust in Lincoln, Nebraska...maybe right next door to you. They have a great selection and good service. Check them out.

Thanks 02Sport+, I am in Lincon, and checking into prices for the magnaflow cat back system. I've heard good things about it. Been to exhaust pros before and was happy with prices and work, probably go there again.

Just remember any after market exhuast will sound louder than stock, you will always hear something in the cab compared to the stock muffler. Once you start tinkering around with the exhaust on the 5.9 you will never stop. First muffler then to full cat back. DO not go with flow master because you will hear the drowning sound for sure. Magna flow is nice but the sound gets boring after a while and that's the problem you will always want something different every year. Damn things are like women you always want something different after a while. Maybe try MBRP or Gibson it's hard to say because everybody has different tastes.

I'm not a street racer, just a guy with a 4x4 that was not happy with the way my stock dakota performed. I really don't care about the sound as long as it isn't droning in the cab, but with a full exhaust no system should sound to bad. I am going to go with the magnaflow cat back system that comes out the same place as the original tail pipe. As long as it opens up the flow and is tolerable on the highway I doubt that I will ever mess with it again, until it falls off.

JD, I see that you are looking to keep your
truck from being too loud so I just thought I
would mention the K&N FIPK you are planning
on. I have a 4.7 Quad Cab with a Flowmaster
Catback on it and it is not obnoxious to me (it
sounds really good actually) although it is
probably louder than the others that have been
mentioned here. I recently put in the FIPK and
to my surprise it is VERY LOUD, ANNOYINGLY
LOUD. I am keeping it because out of all the
mods I have made so far it is the only thing
that has made a big improvement in my fuel
economy. This may not be true of the 5.9 but I
thought I would just let you know.

My opinion for your exhaust would be to go for
the Gibson if you are looking for something
kind of mellow until you put your foot in it, but I
am not too familiar with some of the others
mentioned.

Good Luck
