alright in addition to having a 97 dakota sport i have a 92 gmc seirra with a 5 speed std cab flowmaster exhaust headers intake and 3.73 gears i was driving back from the mall today and when i was sitting at the light and what pulls up next to me a dakota r/t i was hesitent to even begin to think about racing him due to the fact that he would rip me appart. i looked over to him and gave him the friendly nod, i guess he took it the wrong way and thought i wanted to go with him. he started throwing revs at me and when the light turned green he took off. i went normaly and cought up with him at the next light. he was pointing and laughin at me and was trying to look all bad in front of his girl so i deceided what the hell lets give him a run. i threw some revs back at him and staged the truck (2300) he staged his and when the light turned green i dumped the cluth and had some fun. by the end of first i had a 1/2 car on him, i was like ok this lead will come to a quick end i jam second gear the tire breaks lose for a quick sec (non posi) and i saw his nose drop back to the rear of my truck, the end of second gear i neither pulled or lost any i banged out third and cherped the right rear again and he dropped back to what seemed to have been about 10 feet behind my truck at the end of 3rd he closed it to about a 5 foot gap. since my trucks 4th gear syncro is blown i had to get off at the rev limmiter in 3rd which is about 80 mph. i was stunned to hell, how could this of happend i thought rt's were sopost to be fast. mind you my seirra has 150k on it. any ways i pulled into the local hang out spot and he followed me in we shared info about our trucks and it turns out his is a 01 r/t with just a exhaust. there is no way in hell he should have lost to me unless rt's pull extremely hard in 4th? he couldent belive he lost to the seirra. im not putitng the dak down i think there bad ass looking trucks and i cant wait to swap the 408 into my 6er 97. im just looking for some kinda explination. 305=170 hp 360=over 200.

hey bro
i had a 89 GMC sierra. stock it would do mid 15s.
short bed regular cab 350 TBI auto.
at about 160K I had the tranny rebuilt and it hit so hard 2nd gear would spin the tires and 3rd would chirp them. It wasnt anything special but I was still running 15 but on 35s. motor was stock. i just had a K&N exhaust and the lift and 4 10 gears.
Stock RTs arent all that fast I hate to say it.Theire quick but nothing special. they do look good though. If you change some things they get fast but stock I can keep up with them in my dakota and I dont consider it fast. they get me off the line but they dont pull on me once we get going. in fact at freeway speeds I can actually reel one in

There are those of us with R/TS that will admit that our R/Ts arn't sh!T, and there are those with R/Ts that sware they beat everthing on he road. The truth is R/Ts may look good,, but they are slow in today's world. In 98 when they first came out they were marginally fast, in 99 they fell to the Lightning,, then the new GM trucks, then the new Altimas, then the new Honda Accords, then the so on and so on. Dodge didn't do sh!t to keep the R/T competitive, they instead put their marketing into some high priced Ram SRT that most Dodge fans will never own (like the Viper)and we should all be happy with that. B.S.!! If they don't want to give us what we want, then why shouldn't we go out and trade our Dodge diappointments for a Lightning or a harley or even a Mustang Mach 1 (mid 13s!). Dodge sucks now days and we need to realise this! Untill they give us somthing we can be happy with performance wise out of the box and not the " it's got potential" B.S.we should go out and buy other brands that are giving us what we want. Why can't the big 3 give us performance when Honda is giving kick ass performance from modals like the Pilot and the Accord, not to mention Nissan, Dodge sucks, get with it! Please! And all you brand loyal d!ck weeds are not helping by buying their crap blindly, think it's all good just because it's a Dodge! Kiss my @ss Dodge!

You guys don't know the history of the Dakota RT that well.

It was marketed as a performance sport 'Truck'... with dual purpose in mind (good looks, a big engine, and able to tow a sizeable load.)

There was a problems certifying the towing, so that was ax'd. You are left with a 'sport' truck with a big engine, with a 2000# towing capacity. Somewhat of an identity crisis.

With mods to improve midrange/top end (getting out of that towing profile cam/intake/exhaust)-- people have low 13 trucks NA.

Look at it this way-- how many buy a Mustang GT with the intention on racing it or driving it hard, and leave it stock??? Not many. Same thing with imports--- No different. People buy them, and soup them up. The RT is no different. Actually, people with any V8 in a Dakota tend to do this if they are en enthusiast.

I'll take my 12.5 second RT over a Ford anything anyday. Just my preference. Plus I know how to make the magnum powered trucks run good, and what works (and unfortunately what doesn't).

Hmm now i'll give you the Lightning beating the R/T. Now lets be fair its $15,000 grand higher and supercharged.

Now as for the rest of trucks out these days... stock for stock bring em on!

Now if you want to compare the Mach 1 weighing 1,000 lbs less and again costing more well go ahead.

rtdkota you are the only one here with a clue :) rt was built for towing..pulling hard off the line..not 1/4 mile racing...sadly you all dont really have a clue to the type of truck you bought if you think youre gonna smoke everything on 4 wheels as you wont even come close with the stock engine...the 5.9 is a GREAT platform to build one bad ass engine..mine runs low 13's all day long..but it also has had major engine work..no nos no supercharger crap.just a new cam...better rockers..etc..etc...and before ya know it 13's at the track...

who want's something fast out of the box anyway? I'd much rather customize my truck and say that i put in the wrench time on it. That's also how people on a budget build great vehicles...start out with something inexpensive (civic, dakota, etc.) and put parts on as they get the money. Not everyone has wealthy parents or a good job or just hasn't graduated college yet. Not mad at anyone or bashing other vehicles, just my 2-cents.

Hey now...

not ALL R/Ts are slow.... but it definitely seems as if there are many out there that just are slow as hell for some reason.

Mine is bone stock, and I spanked an RSX Type S the other night down here @ the philly street races. RSX-S runs low 15s stock.

If I had any tread on these tires of mine, I wouldnt be surprised to see a 15.0 out of this thing....

that all being said, I really can't afford the car payments/insurance on the thing much more, and reluctantly, I'm trying to sell it. I'm actually willing to take a loss on it in order to save myself financial headaches down the road...
