Subject: Dakota 4WD 2000 CV Axles IP: Logged
Message: I have a 98 Durango with cv joint flanges on the inboard side cup but the 2000 Dakota has nothing except the axle cup is attached to the axle (don't see a clip) and goes into the differential. I just ordered a left cv axle from Raxles.com ($174.95) and wondered if anyone else has changed one of these on this year truck.
BTW, the 98 Durango is easier because you slide the inner boot back and pack the grease and then clamp it back up. Makes for an easy swap as compared to the 2000.
And of course, I'm about to change the upper balljoints. The truck has 64,000 but I suspect that they went bad long before that. In fact I removed them and cut the rubber seal and out fell rusty sawdust like material. There wasn't any greasy feeling to these. I ordered the Moog K7242 for a 99 Dakota because Federal Mogul hasn't supplied the parts to the dealer for a 2000. They say they plan on it in September 2003 but I can't wait any longer. Try rockauto.com ($42.79 each) for these ball joints. The cool thing is that the same part number will also fit my Durango. The only downer is drilling out the rivets (easier than grinding and is neater) and then getting Grade 8 7/16" bolts AND Grade 8 nuts. Remember, if the nut is a grade below the bolt then it's only as strong as the weakest link.

Message: They sure did! Installed them on the 2000 4WD Dak but had to order the 99's because they don't have them in stock yet. Besides, who wants to remove a control arm when all you need to do is drill out the rivets and replace them with 7/16" fine thread Grade 5 or 8 bolts and nuts. I ordered another pair for my Durango. Should be here by Thursday. RockAuto.com shipped them for the Dak and it took only 3 days to Texas with Fed-EX. Ups takes a break on weekends but Fed-EX delivered them Saturday morn.
